I stand at a precipice, frozen. I’ve spent my life walking through life, tilted backwards. Instead of acting, I am pulled along. I resist. Pressures all around me, push and pull. I stay in jobs I hate. I only went to college because my parents made me. If I was running a 5K, I’d be that person whose dog is doing all of the work for them. But that is not what people see. People see me standing straight. I am at the top of a platform, victorious. They do not see my struggles. I only let them see my successes.

wood-stepping-stones

“A bird may love a fish senor, but where would they live?”

A quote from Ever After played in my mind when I saw the juxtaposition of wood stepping stones embedded in the gravel. My mind began to picture the type of person who once lived here: an artist too consumed by work to worry about keeping grass alive. Whomever lived here saw the world in a different way. It was too bad the house was foreclosed. As I confirmed an offer, I wondered what happened to the former owner.

Happy Easter everyone!

“Mummy, they are two high Mummy!”

“Those are special eggs.”

I listened without taking my eyes off my book. Not only did I not enjoy screaming children, I didn’t think Easter should be about eggs and chocolate bunnies. Easter was about cleaning up after yourself, spring cleaning, renewal and all that jazz. Maybe if stupid “spring forward” daylight savings or non-daylight savings hadn’t just happened, maybe I’d be more tolerant of over-sugared children.

I am not a morning person. Never have been, never will be. Can you see this face? This is my “I take coffee right now” face. Don’t you be touching my drawer; this is my drawer. It may be small, but it’s cozy and it’s mine. Now slave, go make my coffee and sprinkle it with catnip.

They tell me otters rape baby seals. They tell me my uncle lied to me, catfished me. They tell me squirrels are just rats with fuzzy tails. These statements, these “truths” do not work for me. Knowing them does not make me happy; knowing them does not affect my daily life. And so I intentionally forget that any of it is true. I design the world I want to live in. I create a world of magic and illusion. Everyone chooses what to believe. They choose whether or not to believe in religion, Fate, magic, vampires, the end of the world. I choose to think that squirrels have nothing to do with rats.

“How come you get all that room, just the two of you. We are crammed in here like sardines.”

“Because we contour cheeks and she doesn’t care about you. Her glasses hide the eye shadow.”

“Shows what you know,” the cotton swabs called down. “She just got contacts.”

Very sorry I haven’t been keeping up with Picture it & Write as normal. I’ve just started a new job and Christmas has been utter chaos this year. Please stick around. Ermisenda is finishing chemo soon and may be able to return to writing. We’ll keep you posted on that as things progress.

“Why are you crying? This is the best woman empowerment song in a decade.” Annie shook her head while I sobbed. She’d watched Frozen before me; I was a bit behind the curb when it came to pop culture. I didn’t want to explain it to her then, not sure how to find the words, but I’d always been different. I’d always seen the world in a different way. To me, Let it Go was the saddest song I’d ever heard. Didn’t she hear the same words I did? Elsa had to distance herself from her family to be who she was. She’d tried to hide, never learned what she could do. What if Mozart hadn’t been allowed to play piano? What if my parents had never bought me my first camera?

Cut along the dashes. Color within the lines. Ha. We are not a cookie cutter family. We bake ninja breadmen and put the lights on the tree last. We own cats who drink from toilet bowls and always want attention. We sing like no one is listening, dance like no one is watching, and eat like calories don’t matter.

candles

Heat surrounds us. My two sisters and I hear whispers, one sided conversations, prayers. People think we have a loom, a thread, sharp scissors. Snip. Ignorance. Our world is not one of colors and pictures, of tapestries and stories. Our world is one of light we cannot see.

We hear the screech of tires, smell alcohol amongst the smoke. The three of us converge on a set of candles and wait. We watch without ever seeing. I purse my lips. Whoosh. Someone’s light is blown out.

dice

Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Scrape.
Like nails. Nails in a coffin.
Nails on a chalkboard.

Dice sealing my fate.
Chance deciding my future.
Snake eyes. Loss. Loss. Loss.
