You need strong roots to survive. When the wind blows and the foundation of your life cracks and crumbles, strong roots hold deep. They reach down and keep you grounded. Unlike a tree, my roots consist of people. My friends, my family. When my bank account runs dry, when I’m battered and bruised, I know I can go home. I know where I can crash. My roots are strong because they know they can expect the same from me.

Spiral Stairway

Our footsteps clanged on the metal stairs while we raced up the long spiral. The steps were narrow and treacherous. Three times, I had to reach for the cold railing, slick with last night’s rain. Dark critters scurried across the building but kept their distance when we drowned them in the light from our flashlights.

“Hurry up, Princess.” My knight offered a hand. He was handsome with dark hair and pointed ears. To everyone else, he was dark and brooding, but I could see his every emotion played out in his aura. He made me feel safe, loved.

“Daydreaming again?” A voice snapped me out of my fantasies and I lowered my camera.

Do you want my problems? I want yours. Gather a group in a room, let’s all pour our problems on the floor because I want to trade. How many do you think will reach for their own again, before I can reach them? I do not feel sorry for myself. I see the second set of footsteps walking with me and one when I was carried. It’s just… cancer is not something you get over. There’s always a fear it will come back. Maybe your problems are worse. I don’t know. But they’re different. They aren’t mine.

polar bear doing yoga

Didn’t flush.

My hand retracted from the stall door as instead of yellow water and brown goop, I’d found a snake inside the bathroom stall. Hopeful, I pushed on the next stall, thankful that there wasn’t a line of people behind me.

Gross!

Someone’s mother hadn’t taught them the proper way to dispose of feminine products. The smell was enough to make bile rise up to the back of my throat. Never mind the site of the products spilling out of the metal bin.

Is it not someone’s job to clean those out? What an awful job. No matter how bad my life gets, at least it won’t be my job to clean no toilet paper.

The last thing I needed was to be stuck on the toilet until someone came by to slide toilet paper to me under the stall or awkwardly try to shimmy in a crouched position with my pants around my ankles to another stall with toilet paper.

Four stalls later, I found one with the paper seat cover, toilet paper, and nothing in the bowl. I was ready to burst. After that, I thought all would be well. My days as Goldilocks looking for just right would be over.

No soap.

“I used to have a beautiful and expansive vocabulary. Then I took two years of calculus and I think the math crowded the English out of my brain.” Maria complained to her tutor while they prepared for the SATs.

“Don’t be silly,” Emmy encouraged. “Your brain is much more expansive than you realize, always growing to accommodate more information.”

Maria rolled her eyes. “Maybe… but if that’s true it’s like that file cabinet in Bruce Almighty. You pull it open and it expands forever, but it doesn’t mean you can find what you’re looking for.”

Emmy smiled. “No more stalling, what does copaibas mean?”

giant ogre

To the woman at the gym: Thank you for what you perceived as a complement. Yes, I am tall. But that is not something worth complementing any more than if you were congratulating me for having a vagina. I know you meant well, but I am not “blessed” for being tall. Did you think about how your words might have affected others, short people in the locker room who you would not consider “blessed” because of their short stature? Being tall is not something to aspire to. It is not something you can change without drastic and painful surgeries.

Tell me my smile is beautiful. Tell me I look really cute in my dress. Complement me for lasting an hour and a half on the elliptical. These are things I can change. They are within my control.

I do not need others to be worse off than me to feel blessed. “You are so tall and someone else could be in a wheel chair. When someone complements your height, you should say, ‘yes, I am blessed!'” You could not understand what was going through my mind as you scolded me. I wish I could have put my thoughts into words then rather than standing there and smiling at you, at a loss for what to say. That person in the wheel chair could have an amazing life. They could be a car crash survivor who feels far more blessed to be alive than I feel about being tall.

I do not need others to be worse off than me to be happy. It’s not a race. It’s not a comparison. More than that, you chose something I can’t control. It doesn’t matter if I like being tall or not. Don’t complement me for being tall. Don’t undervalue other people for being short. Don’t congratulate people for having a vagina or a penis. Those are not complements. Those are facts. Statements. Do not bring others down for things they cannot control. I wish I could have handed you this post, and explained that I don’t need others to mute themselves, don’t need others to shine less brightly to be happy with who I am. Don’t encourage me to feel superior over others because of my physical stature.

Shades of Grey

An effective lie requires some truth. A complete fabrication involving a secret world through the wardrobe where a dragon eats your homework is too far fetched to be believed. It is that element of truth that helps you keep the story straight. If you think about it, there is no black and white. No truth. No lies. Truth is always tainted through our unique perspective. Whether through rose colored glasses or a fun-house mirror, the truth is always distorted. Nothing is black and white.

crying moon

Is there a man in the moon or is it made of cheese? Does the man cry? Would the moon melt into a fondue pot if it got too close to the sun? Surely it is neither man nor woman, for it is consistent. It waxes and wanes. Us lesser mortals strive for it. “Reach for the moon. If you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” That was all well and good until the movie Gravity came out. I want to keep two feel on Earth at all times, save for roller coasters, airplanes, and the like. That doesn’t keep me from dreaming though. Like the North Star, the moon is something I can rely on. It rises and sets. It reminds me that though the world often feels large and lonely, that we call look up at the same moon. We all sleep under a similar blanket of stars.

wall-camo-body-paint

Sometimes, I wish I could disappear into shadow. Ashes to ashes dust to dust, right? Only sometimes. The rest of the time, I know I would be missed. I know how much it would hurt those that I love. What if I could disappear part time? An extended vacation from myself. Sorta like a cruise… one I never told anyone I was going to take. No cell phone. No land line. No internet. What if I stowed away in a cargo bay and just left. Would people be happy to see me back or angry that I deceived them? Sometimes, the pressure to be perfect is too much. I can’t live up to expectations. I can’t steer my own life. Sometimes, I wish I could disappear into shadow.
