Welcome to the Picture it & Write creative writing exercise. I invite people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (please provide a translation). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook and Pinterest.

Please continue to write however you’re inspired, but add a tag to the beginning of your post if there’s mature content in order to keep Picture it & Write an engaging event for all of our followers.

It was my birthday, but none of my friends were here to celebrate. I didn’t get balloons or cake, not even a “happy birthday” from my parents or siblings. The white of the hospital was blinding. I kicked my feet and pouted. How could he do this to me? My youngest sibling was making his way into the world on my birthday. Couldn’t he wait a little longer?

People bustled around me. I heard people calling my name, but sat quietly instead of answering. At least they were thinking of me. It was strange, my oldest brother passed right in front of me, so close I could have tripped him, but he didn’t notice me at all.

“Nathanial,” he called as though I wasn’t sitting right there. I turned my neck to watch him stride by. Was he joking or that oblivious? When I turned back and looked at my reflection in the window in front of me, it wasn’t there.

The bruises on my wrists darkened as the light from the sky extinguished. The slashes on my back continued to sting. Whenever the sea water lapped at an open wound, I cringed. I wanted to crawl away but all my energy had been sapped from me with the whipping.

My fingers dug deep into the sand as I wept. Even with the excruciating pain, I found some solitude. My mind drifted to my beautiful beloved. After all, it was due to our love that I had been left here to rot. White trash like myself was still not suitable for a woman of colour.

The water continued to caress my legs. Then I suddenly tensed. It was not water, there was someone touching my skin. Vulnerable, I tried to close into a fetal position. Was it the men of the village coming to finish the job or maybe my beloved coming to save me? Before I could catch their face, my vision went black.

Want to be wowed? Check out these amazing liquid drop artworks. Check out more work here by Corrie White from the Netherlands. I’m tempted to use one of these for a Picture it & write on of these weeks (maybe the White Lady?).

I love being amazed by such original ideas. It was near impossible to just select a few great pieces of hers. See the rest of her portfolio or share your favourite piece from down below.

They make me think about some kind of wacky sci-fi world. Otherworldly fungi, tiny water spirits, and the like. What do they remind you of? Does it inspire you at all?

While I peacefully stared out into the horizon, my legs kicked furiously beneath the water. The unbroken surface hid the fear. Self-preservation was strong within me but I knew my duty. The goddess needed young blood from a man. Our fishing village’s future was in my hands. I prayed that there would be fish to feed my family tomorrow. I would tread water until she consumed me. Staring out, waiting for her, I cried.

The cold tiles against my toes sent a shiver down my spine. I curled my painted hands over the tub. I sometimes wished, in times like these, that I could push against all sides of the bath until the ceramic shattered. Pearl white shards would be chased by waves of dirty bath water. Why could I not face the outside world once again? Rather than enjoying the warm summer breeze, I was sitting in my own filth. I continued to defile the purity of the bath until the water turned cold.

Shack in a marsh

The house precariously stood by the water’s edge. The water of the lake stood deathly still, reflecting the overcast sky like a giant mirror. The bridge which linked the small island to the land looked dangerously unstable. There were more splits and cracks in the wood than planks used. It wasn’t a comforting sight, and definitely not a romantic one. The man slid his arm behind the woman’s back and pulled her close. The wind smacked their faces, leaving their cheeks rosy red. “I knew we shouldn’t have booked online,” groaned the woman, toying with her new wedding ring.

A ragged old man with one tooth handed them the key to the house. It weighed a tonne and glistened with an eerie golden glow.
