Welcome to the Picture it & Write creative writing exercise. I invite people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (please provide a translation). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook and Pinterest.

Please continue to write however you’re inspired, but add a tag to the beginning of your post if there’s mature content in order to keep Picture it & Write an engaging event for all of our followers.

Are you more motivated by the carrot or the stick? With so many of us preferring positive incentives to negative consequences, why is it that we like to beat each other down, to shame ourselves as an incentive for change? How many of us have looked in the mirror and been our own worst critics?

I’m fat.

I have crow’s feet.

I thought I would outgrow acne by now.

My eyes are uneven.

My ears stick out.

Is that a grey hair?

My eyebrows are too bushy.

We tear ourselves down and then use criticism and bullying to try to make others fit into the mold we’ve created in our mind. I don’t like hairy legs, so you should shave. I don’t like grey hair so you should dye your hair. You need to loose weight. You should wear makeup, change your clothes, pluck your eyebrows, etc. etc. etc. Everyone has an opinion of how others should lead their lives.

It’s time we looked at ourselves in the mirror and changed the way we speak to ourselves. Maybe then, we will change how we speak to others. It’s not wrong to want to improve yourself. Instead of “I’m fat,” look in the mirror and tell yourself, “I want to be healthy. I want to be strong.”
