No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

-Eleanor Roosevelt.

I think the same goes for feeling ashamed. When kindle (and other e-readers) first came out, there were plenty of memes about letting women read trashy romance novels in public. At first, I was excited too because, let’s face it, there are some guilty pleasure books I don’t want people to see me reading. I’m still working on it, but I love this sentiment:

dont-be-ashamed-to-readIt’s like admitting that Sailor Moon is one of my favorite movies and that I play the My Little Pony game on Android. Most of my guilty pleasures are childish, but to feel ashamed, I have to care what strangers think… and the people who know me who “sneak up” without meaning to. Minor details. I hope to someday be comfortable enough to whip out any book I’m reading and just not care; until then, I have my trusty kindle.

Do you have any guilty pleasure reads?

I don’t mean to offend anyone with this post but it was just too funny not to share! 😀

There are so many books we pick up, ravish with our eyes and then put it away satisfied. Those are the books we search for. The ones we want to read. Sadly, there are plenty of books I’ve put down. More than ones I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. Why?

TheHistorianRather than going into an in depth discussion about what makes or breaks a book…there’s one book I want to share with you that I tried to love. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I bought it because it had a beautiful cover (yes, I caved and am a terrible person :P). The story was about “Dracula” or more specifically Vlad the Impaler. It sounded cool. I bought it years ago (I might have been 15 or 16?) and I still can’t finish it (4 years later). I wanted to. But I just can’t. Continue reading →

Twilight vs Tangled

Twilight vs Tangled

Twilight vs Tangled

I have a huge problem with Twilight, not because of the content, but because of the target audience.  I’m actually more comfortable with Fifty Shades of Grey than Twilight because Fifty Shades is targeting adults who know better than to think:

  • this is a healthy relationship
  • this is romantic
  • men with similar qualities should be sought out for a healthy life together

They understand it’s fiction and read it as such. Twilight targets young impressionable girls who won’t understand that controlling “protective” men should  who stalk “protect” them are not ideal boyfriends. So, this sums up my feelings perfectly. Plus, I love the movie Tangled. Fell free to agree or disagree below.

From Pintrist.

I know it says ‘cast’ but, how do you think the Twilight characters would do in the Hunger Games?  Any other novel characters you think would do well or poorly?

Personally, I would love to see Skeeve from the Myth series by Robert Asprin in the Hunger Games.  He has a knack for getting himself out of trouble in the most unique and bizarre ways.
