Stand Bookstore - New York

Stand Bookstore – New York

I thought this was so funny! I love physical books but this isn’t meant to spark a fight about ‘ebook versus physical books’. Both have their advantages. I just thought this was a great little marketing/advertising idea from the bookstore.

What really caught my eye was how they state that ebooks often cost more than physical books. That truly baffles me. I know it’s because they can charge that price, so why not? But it seems ridiculous. But on the other hand, by keeping ebook prices high, that’s helpful for bookstores so they can still compete.

In Australia, I’m not sure if most bookstores can still truly compete with all their book prices. Our books are very expensive compared to American standards. A paperback is very often $16-$28. If there is a good sale, it might be just below $10.

What are your thoughts on ebook/physical book prices?

analogue-kindleI hope this day doesn’t come. 😛

I found this funny picture from George Takei’s Facebook page (he’s amazing!) The winner comment was: It’s one of those analogue Kindles, isn’t it? (by Mark Howlett).

Had to share it! Did it make you smile or laugh?

Is this bookstore of the future? A very cool idea although I wonder how popular it will become.

I recently watched JP Rangaswarmi’s TEDtalk on information. It inspired me to write this post which includes a summary of what he talks about and my thoughts. At first, I thought it was all a bit silly. Seeing information as food? I could get the obvious analogies but I didn’t really see why looking at it from that perspective was of any use. But then I kept thinking a bit more…

For those of us who travel, whether it be across the globe or to stay the night at someone’s place, what do you need to take? Do you take practical items, sentimental items or nothing at all?

When it come’s to a single night at someone’s place the main thing I need to take is my phone. It keeps me connected with my parents who still, even at 19, freak out if I don’t call. It’s my security blanket.

If I am travelling the globe, like I am now (from Australia to Spain – The Canary Islands), I need internet. I need my laptop. I do not need to be connected 24/7 but I must know that I have a source. The laptop itself is required because I know I can write (I can’t write with pen and paper very well) and I can edit my photographs. If I can get mobile internet the laptop becomes the pool of life for me. 😛 Slight exaggeration… but maybe not so slight.

If you suck on a tit the movie gets an R rating.  If you hack the tit off with an axe it will be PG.  ~Jack Nicholson

When I first encountered this quote I thought it was hilarious. I had a good chuckle. *Insert good chuckle*. But then I pondered it on a little longer, and a little longer. Why is that quote surprisingly funny (and slightly exaggerated or is it?) and true? Continue reading →

__may imagination rain down on me

*For whatever reason, the clip is not playing in the post.  Click the image to get it to play properly.

A beautiful little clip that I had to share with fellow readers, writers and anyone else who bothers to look. I’m waiting on technology to make reading this interactive, so much could be done but at the same time the beauty of reading is the imagination. If reading had action bits like this, would you still read it?

The beauty of this clip stands on it’s own but let’s think about it further. If we took the idea literally, would it devalue the reading experience for you? How would you react if a new stream of books were published using such interactive clips among the pages? Is this a possible future for books? (I personally don’t think so but it’s interesting to think about. I think the novelty would wear off.)

Does it provoke any thoughts for anyone else? Who else finds this totally AWESOME?
