I urge people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (provide a translation please :) ). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook and Pinterest.

Please continue to write however you’re inspired, but add a tag to the beginning of your post if there’s mature content in order to keep Picture it & Write an engaging event for all of our followers.

The walls and floors vibrated. The roar of crumbling rocks filled my ears and I scrambled back into a dark corner of the cave. My eyes twitched as blades of light pierced the wall and hit me in the face and body. Laughing hysterically, I shielded my face from the pieces of flying rock. When I brought my arms down, I couldn’t see for what seemed like forever. I was blind. The light was too bright but I was still smiling.

Then I could see. The cold outside world had greeted us again. I looked over to the person who I had been trapped with for the past weeks. Could we just go on with our lives after all that happened? I flinched at the memories, my smile was no more.

Snap. I wondered if I would be able to see my pink beanie in the photograph. It had been at least three weeks since Christmas had arrived and left, and yet I found a Christmas ball upon this tree. Hanging. Dangling. I felt the strange urge to reach out and snap the twig. Snap. I watched it fall, gracefully into the snow with a thud. It didn’t break. I could still see my damn reflection. The seemingly perfect sphere wasn’t so perfect. I could see marks of erosion and decay, like the ornament had developed cancer. My distorted reflection laughed at me, at my failed career. I kicked my reflection. Smash. It broke into a million, fractured pieces in the snow.

I stuck my tongue out to catch the falling snowflakes. They fell upon my shoulders like dandruff but none landed on my tongue. An incoherent babble grew louder to my left. My attention shifted. An old, scraggly man hidden beneath an overgrown beard was “singing” for money. Living in the city desensitized people from the sights of the homeless. I stopped in mid-stride. He looked so pitiful and guilt constricted my heart. I couldn’t walk away, not this time. I scouted my pockets for a couple of coins and found five dollars. I left it in his hat and he grinned revealing all four of his teeth. My fingers caressed my pregnant stomach as I walked away. Maybe I hadn’t saved the man but with each act of kindness I could strive for a better world for my unborn child.
