It’s that time of year again. Time to make another goal on Goodreads after evaluating how I did last year. I’ve committed to 24 books this year after missing last year’s goal of 36 books by 3. Blind Sight has been on hold while Ermisenda takes care of some health concerns so this year will be focused more on writing than reading.

I admit somewhat shamefully that of the 33 books I managed to read last year, enough of them were children’s books that it became my top genre for the first time ever. Some people asked me why I was counting them… well I wouldn’t have been anywhere near my 36 if I hadn’t. That said, I did a better job at picking books. Nine were 5 stars, eight were 4 stars, and only three were one star, giving me the best average star count since 2012.

emotionally-crippled-by-books

I also did a far better job practicing what I preach. Also for the first time since 2012, fantasy was my *cough-second-cough* most read genre instead of romance or adventure. Admittedly, two out of two books this year have been romance, so I’ll need to work on that.

The longest book of 2015 was a record breaking 530 pages: The Wolf of Wall Street.

If you would like to join me in the reading challenge, it’s really fun. Even if you don’t want the pressure to hit a goal, you can commit to one book, but still get to see the stats at the end of the year which is always fun to compare. You can friend or follow me here.

Best of luck to everyone else already participating in the challenge.

The Choice

by Nicholas Sparks

genre: romance

Summary from Goodreads

The Choice by Nicholas Sparks#1 New York Times bestseller Nicholas Sparks turns his unrivaled talents to a new tale about love found and lost, and the choices we hope we’ll never have to make.

Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life – boating, swimming , and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies — he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage and family, THE CHOICE ultimately confronts us with the most heartwrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

John Dies at the End

by David Wong

genre: paranormal, adult*

Summary

John Dies at the End

STOP.

You should not have touched this book with your bare hands.

NO, don’t put it down. It’s too late.

They’re watching you.

My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours.

You may not want to know about the things you’ll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it’s too late. You touched the book. You’re in the game. You’re under the eye.

The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why? You just have to trust me.

The important thing is this:

The drug is called Soy Sauce and it gives users a window into another dimension.

John and I never had the chance to say no.

You still do.

Unfortunately for us, if you make the right choice, we’ll have a much harder time explaining how to fight off the otherworldly invasion currently threatening to enslave humanity.

I’m sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind:

None of this is was my fault.

If I Stay
If I Stay #1

by Gayle Forman

genre: literary fiction

I’m starting to think that reading books because I want to see the movie is a bad idea. It’s led me to move negative reviews than positive ones. Though it was a New Year’s resolution, I’m starting to think if I want to see the movie, I should just go see the movie.

Summary from Goodreads

If I Stay

Just listen, Adam says with a voice that sounds like shrapnel.

I open my eyes wide now.
I sit up as much as I can.
And I listen.

Stay, he says.

Choices. Seventeen-year-old Mia is faced with some tough ones: Stay true to her first love—music—even if it means losing her boyfriend and leaving her family and friends behind?

Then one February morning Mia goes for a drive with her family, and in an instant, everything changes. Suddenly, all the choices are gone, except one. And it’s the only one that matters.

If I Stay is a heartachingly beautiful book about the power of love, the true meaning of family, and the choices we all make.

Guards! Guards!
Discworld #8

by Terry Pratchett

genre: fantasy, young adult

Summary from Goodreads

Guards! Guards! Here there be dragons . . . and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis (“noble dragon” for those who don’t understand italics) has appeared in Discworld’s greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all . . .).

Meanwhile, back at Unseen University, an ancient and long-forgotten volume–The Summoning of Dragons–is missing from the Library’s shelves. To the rescue come Captain Vimes, Constable Carrot, and the rest of the Night Watch who, along with other brave citizens, risk everything, including a good roasting, to dethrone the flying monarch and restore order to Ankh-Morpork (before it’s burned to a crisp). A rare tale, well done as only Terry Pratchett can.

Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke’s Heart
Love by Numbers #3

by Sarah MacLean

genre: historical romance, adult

Summary from Goodreads

love by the numbers 3There is no telling where a scandal might lead…

She lives for passion.

Bold, impulsive, and a magnet for trouble, Juliana Fiori is no simpering English miss. She refuses to play by society’s rules: she speaks her mind, cares nothing for the approval of the ton, and can throw a punch with remarkable accuracy. Her scandalous nature makes her a favorite subject of London’s most practiced gossips…and precisely the kind of woman the Duke of Leighton wants far far away from him.

He swears by reputation.

Scandal is the last thing Simon Pearson has room for in his well-ordered world. The Duke of Disdain is too focused on keeping his title untainted and his secrets unknown. But when he discovers Juliana hiding in his carriage late one evening–risking everything he holds dear–he swears to teach the reckless beauty a lesson in propriety.

She has other plans, however; she wants two weeks to prove that even an unflappable duke is not above passion.
