Fattypuffs And Thinifers

by André Maurois

genre: young adult, political satire

Summary from Goodreads

fattypuffs and thinnifers‘If you go on eating like that you’ll turn into a real Fattypuff,’ thin Mr Double said to his plump son Edmund. He was right, for when Edmund and Terry found the secret staircase in the wood which led to the underground countries, Edmund had to go with the Fattypuffs to their city, where people were huge and happy and ate all day long, while Terry went off with the Thinifers, who were as spiky and prickly as their city. And it took a war as well as a lot of argument before the boys could teach them to agree about anything.

Emotionally Crippled by Books

It’s that time of year again. Time to make another goal on Goodreads after evaluating how I did last year. I’ve committed to 24 books this year after missing last year’s goal of 36 books by 3. Blind Sight has been on hold while Ermisenda takes care of some health concerns so this year will be focused more on writing than reading.

I admit somewhat shamefully that of the 33 books I managed to read last year, enough of them were children’s books that it became my top genre for the first time ever. Some people asked me why I was counting them… well I wouldn’t have been anywhere near my 36 if I hadn’t. That said, I did a better job at picking books. Nine were 5 stars, eight were 4 stars, and only three were one star, giving me the best average star count since 2012.

emotionally-crippled-by-books

I also did a far better job practicing what I preach. Also for the first time since 2012, fantasy was my *cough-second-cough* most read genre instead of romance or adventure. Admittedly, two out of two books this year have been romance, so I’ll need to work on that.

The longest book of 2015 was a record breaking 530 pages: The Wolf of Wall Street.

If you would like to join me in the reading challenge, it’s really fun. Even if you don’t want the pressure to hit a goal, you can commit to one book, but still get to see the stats at the end of the year which is always fun to compare. You can friend or follow me here.

Best of luck to everyone else already participating in the challenge.

The Choice

by Nicholas Sparks

genre: romance

Summary from Goodreads

The Choice by Nicholas Sparks#1 New York Times bestseller Nicholas Sparks turns his unrivaled talents to a new tale about love found and lost, and the choices we hope we’ll never have to make.

Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life – boating, swimming , and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies — he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage and family, THE CHOICE ultimately confronts us with the most heartwrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

Please forgive the language, I didn’t create the graphic–I found it on Facebook.

book-vs-movie

Speaking of, I just watched If I Stay. My review of the book posted in June and I’m just now getting to the movie because the book was so wildly depressing. However, after listening to high school students murder each other in Battle Royale, I was desensitized enough to take on this movie.

When to Rob a Bank

by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner

genre: non-fiction, economics

Summary from Goodreads

when-to-rob-a-bankIn celebration of the 10th anniversary of the landmark book Freakonomics comes this curated collection from the most readable economics blog in the universe. It’s the perfect solution for the millions of readers who love all things Freakonomics. Surprising and erudite, eloquent and witty, When to Rob a Bank demonstrates the brilliance that has made the Freakonomics guys an international sensation, with more than 7 million books sold in 40 languages, and 150 million downloads of their Freakonomics Radio podcast.

When Freakonomics was first published, the authors started a blog—and they’ve kept it up. The writing is more casual, more personal, even more outlandish than in their books. In When to Rob a Bank, they ask a host of typically off-center questions: Why don’t flight attendants get tipped? If you were a terrorist, how would you attack? And why does KFC always run out of fried chicken?

Over the past decade, Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner have published more than 8,000 blog posts on Freakonomics.com. Many of them, they freely admit, were rubbish. But now they’ve gone through and picked the best of the best. You’ll discover what people lie about, and why; the best way to cut gun deaths; why it might be time for a sex tax; and, yes, when to rob a bank. (Short answer: never; the ROI is terrible.) You’ll also learn a great deal about Levitt and Dubner’s own quirks and passions, from gambling and golf to backgammon and the abolition of the penny.

Steven D. Levitt, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago, was awarded the John Bates Clark medal, given to the most influential American economist under forty. He is also a founder of The Greatest Good, which applies Freakonomics-style thinking to business and philanthropy.

Stephen J. Dubner is an award-winning author, journalist, and radio and TV personality. He quit his first career—as an almost-rock-star—to become a writer. He has since taught English at Columbia, worked for The New York Times and published three non-Freakonomics books.

And in her pitch-perfect way, she shows us the truth about what really goes on behind closed suburban doors.

Husband Wanted: Will Train
(Destiny Bay: Baby Dreams #1)

by Helen Conrad

genre: romance

Summary from Goodreads

husband-wanted-will-trainIt seemed a harmless game–until she found out who he really was.

Charity Ames is trapped into a lie and she hates it. She needs a man to pretend to be her husband for a few days–so she hires one. Expecting a gargoyle, she’s amazed when he turns out to be a very appealing hunk.

Ross wants something Charity has, so when he gets the chance to pretend to be her husband, he takes it. But Charity is not the brittle business woman he expects and he falls hard and fast for her barefoot, South Seas image. Trouble is, it’s an image she’s trying to deep six, and she can’t really believe a man from a prominent family like his–and with a terrifying mother like he’s got — would want anything to do with a girl of her shady past.

When she finds out he’s trying to trick her just like she’s trying to trick her aunt, she’s heartbroken and resentful. Can true love bridge the gap between their backgrounds and set the stage for baby-making happiness?
Includes love scenes.

Original published in print by SILHOUETTE DESIRE and recently revised as part of the Destiny Bay Series….
