I found this image and thought it spoke more than just love and hate. It represented that beautiful struggle of love and hate. The concepts themselves don’t seem to be able to co-exist.

Love: a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. Hate: to feel intense dislike, or extreme aversion or hostility. How on earth can they get twisted? And yet, it is one of the most powerful and repetitive themes we see in great novels or movies. The love-hate relationship. The struggle of the two intense emotions fighting to overcome the other.

For those of you who have read Blind Sight, will know how hostile Tatiana is. She has a couple of love-hate relationships I’m working on and I’ve found it to be rather difficult to execute properly.

Have you ever written one? What is your favourite love-hate relationship in the world of fiction?

I urge people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (provide a translation please :) ). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook.

Every fortnight we hope to host a photograph suggested by contributors. So, keep those photograph recommendations coming. Submit your favourite images (with credit) for next week’s Picture it & write!

bath ..
by ~aida-julia

I ran the heavy wet cloth over my shoulders. The water, although once scalding hot, had turned lukewarm. Scattered droplets on my body cooled within seconds. I was only delaying the inevitable and yet it took an hour for me to finish my bath. I didn’t want to face what was to come. I wanted the seconds to suspend themselves. Despite all my desires to halt time, it continued on, unperturbed. My life was about to be changed forever, whether for better or worse, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I viciously threw the measuring tape to the ground. The black and white markings glared at me from down below. It felt good to throw it away. Why did I torture myself over a few kilograms or an inch? I didn’t measure my relationships with my friends, my emotional state, or the breadth of my smile with a tape. So, why did I measure my self-image with one? The tape appeared to writhe on the floor, wanting to latch onto my thighs, hips, and waist to critisice and ridicule me. I had come to realise that a healthy body cannot be determined by a black and white number. I ripped the tape in two. There were so many beautiful shades of grey and I was happy with mine.

His skin burned against mine, he was so warm. I gripped him tighter. We gasped in pleasure. Even after we had stopped moving together we couldn’t let each other go. I could feel his thumb caressing my back in a circular motion. I could feel soft wet kisses marking my neck. I was his. He was mine. I knew that we were already running late. I knew that I would have to detatch myself from his embrace at the airport. I knew we belonged to different, distant countries. But at this very moment, as we clung onto each other for dear life while sobs wracked our bodies, I couldn’t let go.

Untitled By i'm a witch

As a child I never understood the fascination of the game, hide and seek. The pressure of having to find a good hiding spot always made me anxious. What if my hiding spot wasn’t good enough? I would have to be the searcher, a position no one wanted. If my hiding spot was too good, would the other children forget about me and leave? I tried to put my own thoughts away as I played the game with the child I was babysitting.

Maria was a good player and I had been searching for ten minutes without success. An automatic thought was triggered: What if she sneaked out? I started to panic. I ran into the living room. She wasn’t there. I ran into the dining room. She wasn’t there. I ran up the stairs. My heart stopped. Her legs could be seen beneath the curtain, splayed. I threw back the curtain forcefully. Her eyes were open, haunting.
