Picture it & Write is a weekly creative writing exercise. We urge people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow our story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (please provide a translation). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook and Pinterest.

Celebrating the launch of our debut novel last March, each Picture it & Write this month is written using Blind Sight characters.

Please continue to write however you’re inspired, but add a tag to the beginning of your post if there’s mature content in order to keep Picture it & Write an engaging event for all of our followers.

Touch Reflection Creative Writing Prompt

My fingertips reflect the world back to me. What I cannot see, I feel, smell, taste, and hear. I feel shadows as I reach for the sun and smell the coming weather on the wind. I’ve never felt deprived of sight even though I’m blind, but sometimes my fingers have a mind of their own. At first, I felt nothing. There would be periods of my day missing; people actually accused me of drawing. At first I didn’t believe them, now I’m awake when I draw. Despite feeling shoved to the back while something else controls my movement, there’s a wave of serenity that keeps me calm. Am I crazy, or just weak? Everyone else has their magic under control.

-Eliabeth Hawthorne

This piece is about Odette Reyes, the main character in the Blind Sight novels. Her brother Leocardo thinks she’s having premonitions; her best friend Aniela thinks she’s a medium. Who’s right? Whose eyes will you read through?

Again, thank you so much to the artists who entered our contest.  You may see their submissions in the Odette Character Gallery.

Since we could not agree on a winner, we picked two.

Congratulations Samar and A. R. Flynn.

Due to some technical difficulties, we were only able to turn A. R. Flynn’s design into a shirt.  You can buy this shirt in a variety of colors on redbubble.

Weeks ago, during a slow afternoon I was bored. I picked up my pencil and paper and began to draw. I wanted to draw, it was a sudden urge and I followed it. I tried to illustrate my interpretation of Odette. In reality she looks barely like the Odette I imagine but I did try. This inspired the talented Eliabeth to draw a photograph I took. Then we decided to start the Odette character gallery competition.

Click here for more details. I thought I would post my interpretation, pencil and paper as my medium, and remind anyone interested that the contest ends tomorrow (but the gallery is always open to submissions). Congratulations to all of those who have contributed amazing creations, we have been very impressed. For those who still wish to participate, happy art-ing!

Ermilia has been so welcomed and supported by bloggers, we’d love to help promote you now. We are inviting artists, photographers, and anyone else to post images of Blind Sight character Odette Reyes. We already have some wonderful submissions which can be viewed in our gallery.

Odette Reyes
Odette Reyes is the main character whose story spans both volumes of the first book. Blind from birth, her ability to draw is abnormal even for the magical world of Edaion where she and her brother find themselves after mysteriously ripped from their life in Spain. Our first gallery is dedicated to her.

Odette is a sixteen year old with straight medium brown hair that falls just past her shoulders. Freckles cross her nose and cheeks on an olive skin tone and we would like her blindfolded.  Abstract images and photography are encouraged as much as realism. For an optional challenge, you may draw eyes over the blindfold as if embroidered or printed on the fabric.  Your submission may be in any medium and does not need to be in color.
