I am nature. People think they have dominion over me. You’re adorable. I was here before you and I will remain after you’re long gone. You can draw me any way you like. Make me into a nymph or mother. Respect me, sexualize me, it doesn’t matter to me. You are a fragile race. Has no one noticed that you’ve created a weapon that kills you, but me and the roaches survive?

“I used to have a beautiful and expansive vocabulary. Then I took two years of calculus and I think the math crowded the English out of my brain.” Maria complained to her tutor while they prepared for the SATs.

“Don’t be silly,” Emmy encouraged. “Your brain is much more expansive than you realize, always growing to accommodate more information.”

Maria rolled her eyes. “Maybe… but if that’s true it’s like that file cabinet in Bruce Almighty. You pull it open and it expands forever, but it doesn’t mean you can find what you’re looking for.”

Emmy smiled. “No more stalling, what does copaibas mean?”

The tall grass tickled my arms but I didn’t stir. Poised in my crouching position, I prepared to leap if the hunter came my way. The loud thumping of my heart against my ribcage threatened to give me away. Adrenaline coarsed through my body, I wanted to run but if I ran too early I would be no more.

Suddenly, I heard a twig snapping. It was just behind me. Then another twig snapped. Not leaving my life to chance, I bolted across the field. A flock of crows, surprised by my sudden appearance, exploded into a hundred directions. The sweat trickled down my face and the wiry hairs of my beard soaked it up. As I glanced behind me, I noticed that the crows weren’t settling down, they were determined to snatch me too.

Aren’t these pictures amazing? What a beautiful chandelier! It makes me think of fairytales set in forests or even Lord of the Rings. I found the photographs through this link.

Would you like it in your house? What does it remind you of?

Your arms were always open, even when I wronged you.
You gave me life, you gave me air, even when I hurt you.
You never discouraged me, never dragged me down.
You perform little miracles every day,
Even when people are hacking away at you.
I wish for your strength, your patience, and your resilience.
Someday I will stop taking you for granted.

Happy Mother’s Day Mom.
Happy Mother’s Day Mother Nature.

– Eliabeth Hawthorne

Ermisenda was kind enough to let me write something this week for Mother’s Day (anyone who forgot, you better go call your mom now *stern face*).

In the Park
by Gwen Harwood

She sits in the park. Her clothes are out of date.
Two children whine and bicker, tug her skirt.
A third draws aimless patterns in the dirt
Someone she loved once passed by – too late
to feign indifference to that casual nod.
“How nice” et cetera. “Time holds great surprises.”
From his neat head unquestionably rises
a small balloon…”but for the grace of God…”

They stand a while in flickering light, rehearsing
the children’s names and birthdays. “It’s so sweet
to hear their chatter, watch them grow and thrive,”
she says to his departing smile. Then, nursing
the youngest child, sits staring at her feet.

To the wind she says, “They have eaten me alive.”

Double Feature!

Eliabeth found an image she wants to share, so this week we’re doing two images instead of one.

I urge people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (provide a translation please :D). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr.

trees-locked-together-like-fighters

Metal clashed against metal as the blade glanced off the warrior’s armor.  The battle field was stained with blood and the wind carried moans into the abyss of the deserted town.  The dying were left to die with no one left to bury them.  Angered by the drink it could not help but absorb, the earth decided to rebel.  The fighting would end, one way or another.  Just as the victorious warrior ran his blade through the wounded flesh of the other, they both turned into trees, locked together forever.
