The Choice

by Nicholas Sparks

genre: romance

Summary from Goodreads

The Choice by Nicholas Sparks#1 New York Times bestseller Nicholas Sparks turns his unrivaled talents to a new tale about love found and lost, and the choices we hope we’ll never have to make.

Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life – boating, swimming , and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies — he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage and family, THE CHOICE ultimately confronts us with the most heartwrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

Please forgive the language, I didn’t create the graphic–I found it on Facebook.

book-vs-movie

Speaking of, I just watched If I Stay. My review of the book posted in June and I’m just now getting to the movie because the book was so wildly depressing. However, after listening to high school students murder each other in Battle Royale, I was desensitized enough to take on this movie.

The Maze Runner
Movie 1

genre: science fiction, dystopian, young adult

the-maze-runner-movie-posterUsually, I tell people to read the book before the movie. Don’t read the book. Wait for the movie to hit NetFlix. If you’ve read the book, wait a week or two from when you finished reading until you go see the movie. The movie changed 70-80% of the book. I finished the book the same day I went to see the movie, so I sat there the entire time shaking my head with my brows creased thinking, “That’s not how that happened. That didn’t happen. That’s out of order. That didn’t happen. You skipped that. What the…? Why did you change that detail? What did that accomplish? What??? How? That didn’t… How are you going to finish the movie if you changed… you changed the ending…”

Books to read in 2014 before seeing the movie

The writers at POPSUGAR put together a fantastic list of 35 books to read before they are turned into movies this year. I’ve read some of them:

  • Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (Ermisenda’s review)
  • Divergent by Veronica Roth (Ermisenda’s review)
  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

…that I apparently need to review. Ermisenda also reviewed Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.

I’m interested in Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead and The Maze Runner by James Dashner. To be honest, I wasn’t going to read Divergent until I saw the movie trailer and hadn’t heard of Vampire Academy before its trailer. That’s one bonus for movies, they can on occasion allow us to discover books we might not have explored otherwise.

The full list of 36 Books Becoming 2014 Movies is also a convenient pin, so stash it on your TBR board and let’s get reading!

Before I begin this little discussion, I will be discussing the movie Life of Pi and there will be spoilers. For those who have not read the book or seen the movie, it’s advised to not read this post further.

Life_of_Pi_2012_PosterSo, what do I want to discuss in particular? The carnivorous island in Life of Pi.

I watched this movie when I was in The Netherlands in February earlier this year. Many months have passed and I didn’t have the urge to write a little discussion piece until now. My partner recently asked me what I thought the ‘carnivorous island’ meant in the second of the two stories told in Life of Pi. Continue reading →
