Picture it & Write is a weekly creative writing prompt. We invite people to join in by commenting with a work of fiction to accompany the image; it doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (please provide a translation).

Please continue to write however you’re inspired, but add a tag to the beginning of your post if there’s mature content in order to keep Picture it & Write an engaging event for all of our followers.

Explicit content warning.

They tell me otters rape baby seals. They tell me my uncle lied to me, catfished me. They tell me squirrels are just rats with fuzzy tails. These statements, these “truths” do not work for me. Knowing them does not make me happy; knowing them does not affect my daily life. And so I intentionally forget that any of it is true. I design the world I want to live in. I create a world of magic and illusion. Everyone chooses what to believe. They choose whether or not to believe in religion, Fate, magic, vampires, the end of the world. I choose to think that squirrels have nothing to do with rats.

hidden-wizard

I walk through the world, but this is not my home. The colors are dull and low definition. Here, I feel restricted. My clothes are baggy and my shoes cause blisters. I’m stuck as a human. When the bullies chase me home from school, I don’t get to wear my +2 speed sneakers or cast spells with my staff.

At home, in the simulation, I am a 99th level wizard. instead of bullies, I face dragons and I can defeat them. No one messes with me. I have clan members who ban together against my foes just as I do for theirs. Though I have never met my closest friends, I know everything about them. They love me for me, for my raw personality. They do not see the skinny kid or hear my studder.

After I ground the ingredients, I noted them down in the family book. We had to be meticulous, we were the Odonalds and we wouldn’t get this wrong. Two daises. The child’s doll. Sharp needles. Thank You Big Bang Theory for Making Me a Wizard

Harry Potter, magic, wand remote control

wand-remote-controlHow are those two things related? I’m a little behind on Big Bang Theory so last night I watched–what I believe to be–the second to most recent episode. Howard and Raj discovered something I must have. Yay product placement and disposable income.

Have you ever dreamed of going to Hogwarts? This wand won’t get you there but it can turn off the lights, change the channel on the TV, turn on the stereo and just about anything else you can use a remote for. Up to 13 swish and flick commands plus a spinning dial.

This Kymera Magic Wand Remote Control – Universal Gesture Based Remote Control by the Wand Company is sold on Amazon for around $75.

I wants it my precious!

Would you get one or do you think it would be more trouble than it’s worth to remember the motion combinations?

I’m very sorry but in order to continue to help Ermisenda add new and engaging content consistently, I may be unable to reply to every contribution. This has become so popular that I’m just unable to keep up. Thank you for understanding.

man-sitting-on-a-cloudWhy do people think genies are blue and wispy? I blame Aladdin. Phenomenal cosmic power, itty bitty living space? Pff. You know the real reason we only give you three wishes? We want to get rid of you. The rest of the rules are from the Union. No bringing back the dead or fiddling with human emotions. Not that we can’t, we just don’t want to. None of us want to open Pandora’s box and so long as humans think there’s things we can’t do, they won’t fear us. They should though. We’re mischievous creatures. We are the reason for the phrase, “be careful what you wish for.”

Fairy Dust

Better than a Yellow Brick Road

Pop. My neon glasses protected my eyes from the blast of colored powder, but the rest of my face now shimmered in a green even Envy would be jealous of. Impatient children rolled through the colored puddles and fairies fluttered about in pinks, orange, and white. Color fell from my cupped hands as we waited for the countdown. 3… 2… 1… Throwing the dust into the air, we were engulfed in a rainbow cloud that settled on the brick beneath our feet.  My painted nails and red lipstick no longer looked out of place. To us, the colored powder brought out a childish glee as if at any moment it would pick us off the path we ran and carry us to Neverland. For others, it had the power to grant wishes.

Wake

by Lisa McMann

genre: paranormal, YA

Are you fascinated by dreams? I am, so when I heard about this novel I had to read it!

Summary

(Taken from Goodreads)
For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people’s dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie’s seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime. She can’t tell anybody about what she does they’d never believe her, or worse, they’d think she’s a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn’t want and can’t control. Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else’s twisted psyche. She is a participant

Review

After recently reading Dracula, I really enjoyed what this novel provided me. I generally don’t enjoy YA novels as much because they can feel shallow and follow the “high school” formula but this novel was different. I do have to note though, that the main reason why I enjoyed this novel was because of the concept: Janie witnesses other people’s dreams.

Book Review: A Tale of Two Castles by Gail Carson Levine

A Tale of Two Castles

by Gail Carson Levine

genre: fantasy, mystery, young adult

Gail Carson Levine was one of the writers that made me fall in love with reading. I first picked up Ella Enchanted in elementary school and no matter how many times I reread it, the ending makes me cry. I don’t know if my tastes have matured or simply prefer the more dark humor of Simon R. Green, but this book was not for me. There is no doubt in my mind Gail Carson Levine is a brilliant author, but this book fell very flat for me.

Synopsis from Goodreads

Mysteries abound, especially in Two Castles.

A handsome cat trainer, black-and-white cats, thieves on four legs and two, suspicious townsfolk, a greedy king, a giddy princess, a shape-shifting ogre, a brilliant dragon. Which is the villainous whited sepulcher?

Elodie journeys to the town of Two Castles to become a mansioner—an actress—but luck is against her. She is saved from starvation by the dragon Meenore, who sends her on a dangerous mission inside the ogre’s castle. There, disguised as a kitchen maid at an ogre’s feast, she finds herself cast in the role of a lifetime and pitted against a foe intent on murder.

From Pintrist.

I know it says ‘cast’ but, how do you think the Twilight characters would do in the Hunger Games?  Any other novel characters you think would do well or poorly?

Personally, I would love to see Skeeve from the Myth series by Robert Asprin in the Hunger Games.  He has a knack for getting himself out of trouble in the most unique and bizarre ways.
