Plum Lucky

Stephanie Plum #13.5

by Janet Evanovich

genre: mystery

Synopsis from Goodreads

Stephanie Plum has a way of attracting danger, lunatics, oddballs, bad luck . . . and mystery men. And no one is more mysterious than the unmentionable Diesel. He’s back and hot on the trail of a little man in green pants who’s lost a giant bag of money. Problem is, the money isn’t exactly lost. Stephanie’s Grandma Mazur has found it, and like any good Jersey senior citizen, she’s hightailed it in a Winnebago to Atlantic City and hit the slots. With Lula and Connie in tow, Stephanie attempts to bring Grandma home, but the luck of the Irish is rubbing off on everyone: Lula’s found a job modeling plus-size lingerie. Connie’s found a guy. Diesel’s found Stephanie. And Stephanie has found herself in over her head with a caper involving thrice-stolen money, a racehorse, a car chase, and a bad case of hives.

Three to get Deadly

Stephanie Plum, #3
by Janet Evanovich

genre: mystery

Synopsis from Goodreads

A “saintly” old candy-store owner is on the lam-and bounty hunter extraordinaire Stephanie Plum is on the case. As the body count rises, Stephanie finds herself dealing with dead drug dealers and slippery fugitives on the chase of her life. And with the help of eccentric friends and family, Steph must see to it that this case doesn’t end up being her last…

Review

Stephanie Plum is amazing.  In other books, I’ve considered her emotionally dysfunctional, but I take it all back over this one paragraph.  (Loc. 3559 on Kindle)

There’s a limit to how far a woman can be pushed.  I’d been gassed, attacked, stalked by masked men, lied to… swindled by my mechanic.  And I’d stayed pretty damn calm through it all.  Threatening my hamster brought out a whole new set of rules.  Threatening my hamster made me Godzilla.  I had no intentions of saying goodbye to my hamster.

Don’t get me wrong, Stephanie is a walking disaster who has no business being a bounty hunter, and in real life she would be a menace to society and dangerous, but in literature she’s amazing.

Two for the Dough

Stephanie Plum, #2
by Janet Evanovich

genre: mystery

The sequel to One for the Money, Two for the Dough can be read without book one.  It’s easy enough to follow the plot and the relationships at this point in the series without feeling as though you’re dropped back into high school and you’re not sure who has slept with whom and who has seen whom naked.  This is not a YA book, though it is not as graphic as other Stephanie Plum novels, it’s descriptive enough that parents should screen it before letting their kids read it.

Synopsis from Goodreads

Bounty hunter Stephanie Pum is still learning the ropes at her cousin Vinnie’s bail bond office, so when she sets out on the trail of Kenny Mancuso – a suspiciously weatlhy, working class Trenton boy who has just shot his best friend – the stakes are higher than ever. That Mancuso is distantly related to vice cop Joe Morelli – who is trying to beat Stephanie to the punch – only makes the hunt more thrilling…

Taking pointers from her bounty hunter pal, Ranger, and using her pistol packing Grandma Mazur as a decoy, Stephanie is soon closing in on her mark. But Morelli and his libido are worthy foes. And a more sinister kind of enemy has made his first move… and his next move might be Stephanie’s last.

Movie Review: One for the Money

I reviewed the book, One for the Money by Janet Evanovich yesterday, and I have to say you have to read the book first.  If you see the movie and then read the book, you may not like how violent the book is.  That being said, obviously the movie takes some creative liberties, but all of them I approved of.

One for the Money was funny, quirky, and captured the essence of the book nicely. Could not have cast someone better for the role than Katherine Heigl.  She did an amazing job mixing clumsy, stupidly brave, and sexy all into one Stephanie Plum package.  The men who played Ranger and Joe Morelli were attractive, but did not live up to the descriptions in the book.  I can’t blame them for it though, there’s only so much nature can do where as the imagination is limitless.  Lula was beautifully cast.  She was probably the best of the bunch after Stephanie.  It’s killing me wondering who is going to play Sally Sweet if the movies go that far.

The tension and chemistry was spilling off the screen in all the right places.  It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen recently.  I’m curious to see how many other Janet Evanovich books will be turned into movies.  With a series as long as the Stephanie Plum books, I’m worried the interest will fizzle out, so we’ll see.

Fantastic!  5 out of 5 stars.

One for the Money

Stephanie Plum, #1
by Janet Evanovich

genre: mystery

Stephanie Plum is a young and less intelligent Mrs. Pollifax. After her losing her job, her car, and having to pawn most of her furniture, she knows she’s hit rock bottom. She blackmales her cousin Vinny into giving her a job as a bounty hunter and by pure luck, she manages to do a fair job.  Much like Mrs. Pollifax, if it’s possible for her to get into trouble, she does, but she does it in such hilarious manners, that you can’t help but cheer her on.

One for the Money is the first in the series.  This is the third (or maybe more) time that I’ve read it and I still love it. I’m really excited to see how the movie plays out. By the time this posts, I will be in the movie theater, somewhere in the second half, so the movie review will come out tomorrow.

I’m caught up on my Goodreads challenge list and promised reviews.  Now I’m curious what you would like to see next on the schedule from me.  I’ve narrowed it down to 4 books and included their GR blurbs.  I’ll leave the poll up for a few days until I’m done with my final Blind Sight revision to keep myself from reading any more until that’s done.

Would you like to see…

Fezariu’s Epiphany by David M. Brown
12-year-old Fezariu thought his mother died when he was little, but when his beloved stepfather dies the boy discovers she is alive and well – and working at the most famous brothel in all of Elenchera. When she cruelly rejects him it’s more than he can bear, and he runs away to join a band of ruthless soldiers for hire. The Merelax Mercenaries will fight for anyone who can pay them, no matter the justice of the cause.

Fezariu grows up among the soldiers and becomes one of them. He thinks his time with the mercenaries has hardened him. But a campaign in his old home town pushes him too far, and he discovers what really happened to his mother. Maybe there are some things money shouldn’t buy… and maybe it’s time Fezariu took his revenge.

Ten Big Ones

Stephanie Plum, #10
by Janet Evanovich

genre: mystery

-This is the 10th Stephanie Plum novel.  I’ve read some but not all of the novels leading up to this one.  Keep that in mind when reading the review.

Stephanie Plum is a bounty hunter from Jersey, and not a particularly good one. She claims that trouble follows her, and though there is truth to that, she tends to make reckless decisions, like going into gang territory trying to ID a gang member after witnessing a robbery.  While I often want to throttle her for these moves, it would not be a very interesting book if all she did was hide in her apartment. Meanwhile, the other characters are colorful to say the least.  The hairy cross dresser Sally Sweet and Stephanie’s gun happy trouble maker grandmother are two of my favorites, followed closely by the file clerk Lula.  Lula, a voluminous black ex-hooker who thinks animal spandex makes her look thinner, adds trouble, drama, and entertainment to every scene she is in.
