Harry Potter, identity crisis, Sorted This Way, Tom Felton, Twitter

It’s official, Tom Felton, who plays Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies belongs in Gryffindor. And yes, he is heartbroken.

Today was the day. I finally did it. I joined Pottermore and was sorted into……..Gryffindor. Heart broken x #slytherinforlife

— Tom Felton (@TomFelton) January 21, 2015

What’s really funny is that Rowling apparently knew all along but “didn’t want to spoil [his] motivation.”

For some of us, our Hogwarts house is as much a part of us as whether we were in band or sports. When I joined Pottermore, I was thankful that my house results came out as expected: Ravenclaw. Not sure what I would have done if it had come out any differently. As much as I respect the other houses (sans Slytherin) I might have had an identity crisis if the official results deviated. Then again, maybe I would have told myself that if the Sorting Hat were real, I could have pulled a Harry and swayed it into letting me in Ravenclaw instead.

And if you haven’t seen the Lady Gaga Parody, “Sorted This Way,” you need to. 😉

Tell us which house you belong to in the comments below.

big bang theory, Harry Potter

I hope to someday have a broad enough fan base that people make fun of Ana or Nate with something like this…

people draco thinks should hear about this

It just reminds me of the gap between your average author and the greats. There’s more to it than the basic grasp of the language you’re writing in. Characters have to have depth and quirks. You need to find that right blend of suspense with humor sprinkled in so there’s a break for the audience.

But I digress. Here are some more of my favorite Harry Potter memes. Click each to repin and follow us on Pinterest.

buzzfeed dumbeldore video, Dumbledore, funny writing post, Harry Potter, laughter, stress relief, tears

I’ve just come out of the three most stressful weeks of my life. I would rather be back in school taking finals or sitting through the SAT than relive the last three weeks. You guys have been so patient and so supportive. Thank you for continuing to read and comment. Special thanks to Ermisenda who has held my hand and wiped my tears from half way around the world.

There have been moments, especially in the last three weeks, where I had to laugh so I wouldn’t cry. I started keeping a happiness journal and will probably go beyond the 100 days. I’ve found that I need to do and find things that make me happy rather than relying on others to make me happy. But that’s a topic for another post. Today I wanted to share one of the things that made me laugh and kept me from crying.

Raindrops on roses? Whiskers on kittens? What are some things you turn to when the dog bites or the bee stings?

Harry Potter, magic, wand remote control

wand-remote-controlHow are those two things related? I’m a little behind on Big Bang Theory so last night I watched–what I believe to be–the second to most recent episode. Howard and Raj discovered something I must have. Yay product placement and disposable income.

Have you ever dreamed of going to Hogwarts? This wand won’t get you there but it can turn off the lights, change the channel on the TV, turn on the stereo and just about anything else you can use a remote for. Up to 13 swish and flick commands plus a spinning dial.

This Kymera Magic Wand Remote Control – Universal Gesture Based Remote Control by the Wand Company is sold on Amazon for around $75.

I wants it my precious!

Would you get one or do you think it would be more trouble than it’s worth to remember the motion combinations?

I saw this on one of the Facebook pages I follow and it made me laugh. It’s so true though. (Plus I’m a huge Pokemon fan). The muggle borns could have their own secret club and inside jokes to get back at the elitist purebloods. Although, I cannot remember the ratio of muggle borns to purebloods. Were there enough muggle borns to start a club?

I think one of my favourite moments in the books was in the Deathly Hallows when ‘Cinderella’ was mentioned. Ron thinks it sounds like a name for a disease but Harry and Hermione know that it’s a fairytale. It’s always cool to see how worlds collide and the way people interpret unfamiliar words or objects.

Also, happy Valentines Day everyone! While many celebrate this day with their romantic partners (if they have someone), it should also be a day to love yourself. In the words of Oscar Wilde, “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.” So enjoy that amazing romance with oneself today, and all days. It is also ‘1 Billion Rising‘ day. A fantastic campaign where people over the world dance to demand an end to violence against women and girls. So, remember to love yourself and those who you care about, and dance to end violence and celebrate joy.

Thanks Ermi for covering me last week while I moved. I will be hosting the next two installments of Picture it & Write.

Welcome to the Picture it & Write creative writing exercise. I invite people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (please provide a translation). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook and Pinterest.

Please continue to write however you’re inspired, but add a tag to the beginning of your post if there’s mature content in order to keep Picture it & Write an engaging event for all of our followers.

“You’re a grown woman. How long are you going to insist on having childish birthday parties?”

“Always.”

It hurt Samatha that her friends couldn’t understand. Needless to say, they were not part of the fandom. Racing home, she dumped the Jelly Bellys into a bowl and poored the butter beer. She was having an “adult” birthday party damn it. She’d found a Harry Potter drinking game after all.

Harry Potter, Harry Potter drinking game

Keeping to this week’s Harry Potter theme, check out this wonderful gem I found via a friend. Haven’t played it yet, but there will be drinking and hippogryph riding at some point. Perhaps I’ll have a Harry Potter themed birthday; you’re never too old for a Harry Potter birthday.

image-2611302716Recently, news has broken out that JK Rowling released a novel under a pseudonym. When I read this, I thought it was fantastic. It would be such a great change of pace for these high profile writers to get a book out there without so much hype and expectation. She could get feedback that wasn’t coloured by everyone’s thoughts on Harry Potter.

What irked me a little was that she chose a male name. Her pseudonym was Robert Galbraith. Now I know the reasoning. I also know the reasoning why she chose initials rather than using Joanne when she wrote Harry Potter. It’s unfortunately true that male or neutral names have been said to sell more than female names. I remember being confronted with this choice when I chose my author penname. I chose Ermisenda as it was the name of my great grandmother who raised my mother as if she was her own child. Her life is one that could be written into a story. How she struggled with her family, a terrible husband, and being ostracized for some time in her own Spanish village. But this isn’t a post about her. I chose the name because I wanted to be identified as a female, and the name had personal significance to me and my heritage.

I found this video the other day and have to share it. I love Poetry Slams. They are amazing. They remind me of my love for words, the power they can yield, and the strength of performance. The way you communicate your poem, the emotion you express, is as important as the words that leave your lips. (By the way, check out Samson if you want some more powerful poetry slam.)

Rachel Rostad (“To JK Rowling, from Cho Chang”) chilled me to my core. It was not what I was expecting and I hope you all enjoy it. If you feel like she is being harsh, she made a follow-up video about the criticisms she received. Continue reading →
