It is much harder to hammer nails than you might think.  I could either hit the nail hard or straight, there was really no doing both.  Since most of what needed to be done required a ladder and being more than two rungs up petrifies me, I was thankful they were accommodating and found odd jobs for me like removing nails from supports and picking up scrap pieces.

Only having volunteered in the office or ReStore, this was my first time on a job site.  I hurt.  But it was rewarding and I got to go with a group of people I really enjoyed working with.  No longer can I say I’ve never used a staple gun.

I highly doubt anyone wants me building their house.  I cannot remember ever hitting a nail straight, but I can paint.  I figured my jeans needed a little more color.  Luckily for me, Habitat for Humanity has a tab on their website for people who want to be involved, but have no idea what they are doing: Non-Construction.  Thrilled that I could do office work, retail, or something in public relations, I decided it was time to stop talking and start doing.  It is one thing to say “when our books sell, we’ll donate to charities X, Y or Z;” it is another thing to put my time where my mouth is.

Today was my first day working at ReStore, a retail store that resells items to raise money for the construction materials used in projects.  While this time I spent 2 hours reorganizing the lighting department, they have promised to give me marketing and PR work next time I’m in.  I will get to help write the newsletter and learn about press releases.  So long as I don’t have to hammer anything, I’m happy.
