editingredpenWhile I have gripes about some aspects of my creative writing class (mainly directed at the professor), one thing I really enjoyed was bringing 500 word workshop writing pieces. Even though the feedback was coming from other inexperienced students and then a single ‘experienced’ teacher, the idea was fantastic. Think about it, if you had to show only 500 words of your story, what 500 words would you show?

As soon as I had that word limit, I found myself fussing over the 500 words. It was 500 words that was somehow meant to intrigue, inform, and ‘show off’ what writing ability I had. I wanted feedback but I wanted to give my best. After all, this was the first time I was showing a group of people like this my work. I edited those 500 words many times. I felt like the 500 words I ended with was better than the 500 words I had SIMPLY because I was fussing over it.

That’s the editing fever that every author needs. If we treated each 500 words of our story as a segment, would our stories become stronger over all? I think so. When you’re writing novels especially, you can get lazy at moments or slide in lazy transitions. I also liked how the 500 words made me question each scene I had. If I wasn’t proud to read it out loud, should it be included? Continue reading →

It can be a poem or in a different language (provide a translation please :) ). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook and Pinterest.

Every fortnight we hope to host a photograph suggested by contributors. So, keep those photograph recommendations coming. Submit your favourite images (with credit) for next week’s Picture it & write!

To and fro we danced. Sensual twirls, abrupt dives. It was easy at first. The ground was arid like a desert, my toes dry. With each lock of our gazes, I found myself closer to him. My eyes lost their flirtatious flutter, I tugged to free myself. While his firm was gentle, a strength that intimidated me lay quietly beneath the surface. I despised him. The two of us could never work. From the frantic and energetic moves we started from, we had surrendered to rhythmic swaying. The tension dissipated as waves of chemistry swirled around us. His body molded around mine. We were alone in an ocean of intimacy; wet fingers touching, moist tongues. I felt safe. My leg encircled him, ripples of pleasure ran up my thighs. They often say love and lust are enemies, but why not lovers?

Snap. I wondered if I would be able to see my pink beanie in the photograph. It had been at least three weeks since Christmas had arrived and left, and yet I found a Christmas ball upon this tree. Hanging. Dangling. I felt the strange urge to reach out and snap the twig. Snap. I watched it fall, gracefully into the snow with a thud. It didn’t break. I could still see my damn reflection. The seemingly perfect sphere wasn’t so perfect. I could see marks of erosion and decay, like the ornament had developed cancer. My distorted reflection laughed at me, at my failed career. I kicked my reflection. Smash. It broke into a million, fractured pieces in the snow.

Oh my gosh… yoga is amazing.

I bought myself a yoga mat and 3 yoga discs all at the beginner level.  AM/PM yoga, essential yoga for inflexible people, and yoga for stress relief.  After less than a week, I sleep better, I hurt less, and I’m calmer.  I do my AM/PM yoga routines and anything else I can squeeze in from the other discs.  Since the inflexible ones all require a chair, I’ve been mostly doing the AM/PM and stress relief DVDs.

If you need to exercise as one of your New Years goals, try yoga.  Any of our readers already doing yoga?  What type do you do?  Do you do it in a group or by yourself?

Since I love writing and I hope you do too I felt like starting something new on our blog. I will post an image I find inspiring in some way and will write the first fiction introductory paragraph to accompany the image that comes to mind with me. I like doing exercises like this, it keeps my mind fresh and the creative juices flowing.

I urge people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language. Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph has been reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr.

Creative Writing Prompt

My jaw chattered like it had a life of its own. I couldn’t feel the tips of my fingers or the soles of my feet. Fragile twigs snapped silently as I ran. White plumes blurred my vision as I desperately breathed out and sucked in the chilling air. All I knew was that I had to keep running. If I could just out run it all, it would disappear. The crippling memories would release me and I could forget all I had done. I would be free. If I kept running, maybe I could escape from myself.
