The Games We Play

by Sean Hayden

genre: paranormal romance, short story

Synopsis from Goodreads

A smoky bar, a few too many drinks, it had all the makings of a perfect night. It looked even brighter when he walked in. “Tall, dark, and delicious,” she thought. Too bad Veronica didn’t realize he was having the same thoughts about her. She looked very delicious…to the predator. A shot with a chaser quickly turns into just a chase. Running for her life was not how she thought the night would end. Veronica had always had a thing for games. She could only pray she would win this one.

Review

Completely neutral.  I have nothing to say about this book, which is not generally something you’d see in a review, but there it is.  It was fine, well written, and short.  It’s something to read to pad your books for the year if you’re behind on your Goodreads Challenge; it just went by too quickly for me to feel any emotional attachment at all.

It doesn’t seem to be the introduction to a longer story, so it doesn’t even have that going for it, but there’s nothing negative to give it less than three.

3 out of 5

I have a couple friends who “don’t like to read.”  I think they’re just reading the wrong material.  One of them devoured Fifty Shades of Grey and is already into book 2.  If you don’t enjoy reading, try out different genres and authors.  I’m a firm believer that there’s books out there for everyone.

Three to get Deadly

Stephanie Plum, #3
by Janet Evanovich

genre: mystery

Synopsis from Goodreads

A “saintly” old candy-store owner is on the lam-and bounty hunter extraordinaire Stephanie Plum is on the case. As the body count rises, Stephanie finds herself dealing with dead drug dealers and slippery fugitives on the chase of her life. And with the help of eccentric friends and family, Steph must see to it that this case doesn’t end up being her last…

Review

Stephanie Plum is amazing.  In other books, I’ve considered her emotionally dysfunctional, but I take it all back over this one paragraph.  (Loc. 3559 on Kindle)

There’s a limit to how far a woman can be pushed.  I’d been gassed, attacked, stalked by masked men, lied to… swindled by my mechanic.  And I’d stayed pretty damn calm through it all.  Threatening my hamster brought out a whole new set of rules.  Threatening my hamster made me Godzilla.  I had no intentions of saying goodbye to my hamster.

Don’t get me wrong, Stephanie is a walking disaster who has no business being a bounty hunter, and in real life she would be a menace to society and dangerous, but in literature she’s amazing.

Angela of Troy

Prequel to Golden Mane, Book One of the Adventures of Sarah Coppernick
by SJB Gilmour

genre: fantasy

Synopsis from Goodreads

Angelina Troy was a woman of legend. Seasoned veterans feared her sword and gods themselves lusted after her body, just as demons in the pits of the darkest hells loathed her and her necromantic power. Nothing, it seemed, could bring her down.

Then she met the one man who neither feared her nor desired her – the fearsome and equally powerful Silver Shroud werewolf Benjamin McConnell. It was that encounter that sparked her ultimate downfall and terrible fall from grace… Continue reading →

Speculation

by Edmund Jorgensen

genre: mystery

The highest complement I can pay any form of entertainment is that it is more captivating than SIMS.  Speculation is more captivating than SIMS.  I guess you have to know me in order to understand the magnitude of that statement, so the short version is that when I play SIMS, I keep track of their personality numbers, their physical traits, their aspirations, skills, and finances in multiple Excel sheets to discover which Townies have dyed their hair, which SIMS will progress rapidly through their chosen careers and who to breed should I ever desire to create the ultimate SIM.  Some people have drugs, I have SIMS.  Speculation is more captivating than SIMS.

Synopsis

What, besides even more money, is worth giving up ten million dollars?  That is the question that faces Andrew when his friend dies and leaves him a stipulation in the will.  He can either have 10 million dollars, or he can have a sealed envelope.  If he chooses the money, the envelope will be destroyed; if he chooses the envelope, the money will be divided up between several charities.  Andrew wants time to think, to go through the three boxes of random paperwork from his friend’s death, the only clues he’s given as to the contents of the envelope, but Andrew’s wife is a little less understanding.  After all, Andrew’s friend died of a brain tumor and he liked to play games, sometimes at Andrew’s expense.  Who is not to say this is an elaborate joke and the envelope contains nothing of value.  She wants him to take the money, but days turn into weeks and Andrew has yet to make a decision.

Monstrous Regiment

Discworld, #31
by Terry Pratchett

genre: fantasy, adventure, young adult

No damsels in distress here!  If you want a book with a strong female protagonist, this is a book for you.  This is very much a “one grain of rice may tip the scale” story.  I actually had a scene from Mulan playing in my head when Polly cut off her hair to join the army even though her reasons for doing so were a little different.

Summary

Borogravia doesn’t have scenic mountains or natural resources, they don’t even have a god who is all there in the head metaphysically speaking, but the people are proud that it’s theirs and they are willing to kill for it.  So willing that they’ve gone into war with almost, if not all, of their neighboring countries.  Everyone knows they’re losing, but no one is willing to say it.  Men come back missing body parts if they come back at all and the last of the recruits seem too young to have sprouted any facial hair.  Among them is Polly Perks, a plain girl who doesn’t need to do much more than cut her hair and stuff socks down her pants to pass for a boy.  She’s joining the Ins and Outs to find out what happened to her brother Paul, but the journey ends up being much more than a rescue mission as she learns not everything is as it seems.

I’m dying to read Catching Fire, but I’ve had a deluge of review requests come in this month (YAY) and those always jump in front of leisure reading.  However, after this batch of author requested reviews, I will be taking a hiatus to read Catching Fire and 50 Shades of Grey before committing to anything else.  This list does not include paperbacks which I read at the same time as my ebooks, but check out what’s coming up in the next two months on Ermiliablog.
