Excuse me while I sob over spoilers. Why do people like to ruin stories? Tales are sacred, be they fantasy or mystery. If I could have a super power, it would not be to see the future. Don’t tell me who done it. Don’t tell me who dies. Don’t you know that when you do a fairy loses her wings and I lose a part of my soul? I feel my throat closing up. The world goes dark.

Kill them. by Senju-HiMe

They had beaten and abused me. They had spat in my face and stuffed my mouth full of dirt. Those men were the same who had taken advantage of a teenager who had run away from home. My chest rose and fell as my breathing doubled in speed. I felt her cool finger tips crawling along my back like a spider. I wasn’t a weakling anymore, I was strong. Bite marks were still fresh on my skin as she had lustfully devoured me. The men were outside the dirty country bar, as they were every night. Part of me wanted to walk away but her desires were now mine. I felt her luscious lips open, as if they were my own, and whisper, “kill them.”

Collecting youth. by alexstoddard on Flickr.

The sharp nail scraped my chin. It may as well have been a blade as the lethal, gritty edge punctured my skin. With my half closed and yet fluttering eyes, it was hard to see the person before me. I wanted to run but I needed the money. I needed to seal this deal. The darkness was thick and appeared to pulse rapidly, just like my wild heart. “Lavish in your newly acquired riches,” the gravelly voice spoke, from neither a man or woman but something much more hellish. “But the clock is ticking and I will collect.” The gnarled finger caressed my cheek and I shuddered.

Invaders by *syda-ginger

We shared wet, warm kisses. My lover caressed my neck with her lips. While I faced the windshield I noticed a vague outline. Who was standing there? “What’s wrong?” My lover cooed. Suddenly, she gasped in shock. I turned the key in the ignition and the lights flooded the standing figure. The sight of my exposed daughter shivering in the silent night paralysed me. Tears streamed down her face. There was blood on her neck. I jumped out of the car and rushed to embrace her. My heart was beating furiously in my chest. Unexpectedly, I felt a painful pinching sensation on my neck and pushed her away. My blood dripped from my daughter’s lips before she let out a demonic screech.

Dracula

by Bram Stoker

genre: horror, Gothic, classic, vampire

Have you been meaning to get around to this dark classic? I finally did!

Review

Before you continue to read my review, I probably should state that I don’t really enjoy books of epistolary nature (told through letters and diaries) and I also don’t like the writing style of classic novels. I am someone who enjoys a gripping story and fast-paced, powerful writing. I loved the story of Frankenstein, but the writing annoyed me to no end. The writing in Dracula also annoyed me but thankfully it did have a great plot. A “true” vampire novel to say the least.

My first substantial introduction into the Dracula story was with the movie ‘Van Helsing’ when I watched it many years ago (I was 12 or so), I thought it was the best movie ever. Only now, after reading the original novel, do I realise how silly and inaccurate the movie was. For one: Van Helsing should definitely have not been played by the rugged, attractive Australian actor, Hugh Jackman, considering the fact that the Dutch character was old, overweight, and balding (if memory serves me right). For two, where the heck is the rest of the team and why are there werewolves involved? Either way! I loved the dark themes of that movie and fell in love with Dracula and his flock of voluptuous, blood-thirsty vampire ladies. The corrupt, evil, alluring vampires were one of my first, if not first, love of the supernatural. I can’t stand romantic vampire novels (I’m not judging!) because I love it so much better when they are truly, and inherently, evil (cue thunderstorm strike and manic laughter). Only now, 8 years later, did I decide to read the book. So, here it goes!

The Hunger Games Series

by Suzanne Collins
4.5 stars

Overall, I loved this series. I bought it because everyone had been raving about it. I kind of dismissed the comment and went to find out what was so good about this series. They were so good. These books were gripping and I couldn’t put them down. I originally didn’t read too much young adult but recently I have been reading more and more. It’s been a good phase so far.

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games #1

The Hunger Games was fantastic. I thought it was brilliant, original and fast-paced. That was the kind of book I had been looking for. An action packed world with a kick-ass female character. One thing that annoys me about YA in general is that the world’s often seem unrealistic and the romance usually makes me want to vomit. This one didn’t have that effect. Sure there was a love triangle but to me I think it’s more of a third wheel approach (at least to me it was obvious who Katniss would choose). Romance isn’t the height of the book which I enjoy, the main focus is the action and gripping plot.

First one is a definite 5 out of 5. I recommend it to all.
