When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you notice your flaws, do you exaggerate them? Do you think you are fat when in reality you are thin? Or is the opposite true? Do you think you are better than you are? Do you put yourself on a pedestal, one undeserved. Or does your reflection show your true self? Do you see your deepest darkest desires? Do you see yourself with a new pair of socks?

“What do you think you’re doing?”

“Bury me!”

“What are you, five?”

“22. I’m such a tourist.”

“No, tourists don’t ask to be buried in the sand. You’re just weird.”

I look behind me, trying not to be obvious about the fact I’ve been eavesdropping. The girl is long and lanky. I would have been able to keep my face poised except that she is wearing mermaid fins as she shouts her commands.

“Why is everyone laughing?” Cloe leaned over and whispered to Lane.

He patted her leg affectionately. “Don’t worry about it.”

From the chuckles and sideways glances, she knew someone had made an innuendo, but she had no idea what. While she’d originally appreciated Lane “protecting” her innocence, it was getting a bit old. Did he think she was some delicate flower? She was about to burst his bubble.

The creature stared at me. I took another step towards it. The dragon didn’t flinch as I made my way up to it, sword in hand. Was it not scared? Every fibre of my being was taut with nerves. With each step I took, I waited for the dragon to snap and devour me.

I took the last step and crouched beside the beasts head which lay on the cold stone floor. Feeling stupid with my sword in hand, I lay it on the ground next to me. Maybe this beast could help me on my quest? I looked to the beast again and felt something grip my heart. It’s eyes… they were hers. But where was she? I snatched my sword off the ground and leapt back.

“Where is she? And why do you have her eyes?!” My voice broke with emotion.

I froze. My eyes ran up the stone sculpture, absorbing the woman’s features. I stared at her nose, her eyes, her lips, her curly hair. She… She…

“Miss Harley says we have free time to wander the museum.”

“How long?” I asked, keeping my eyes on the sculpture.

“I think twenty minutes. Want to see the Picasso exhibition?”

I shook my head. “I’m going to stay here.”

“For twenty minutes?”

“Yeah.”

My friend paused and then left. I stepped closer to the sculpture and inspected the way her hair had been sculpted. Her hair was just like my hair. She had my features. She was the first time I had ever seen my race in a classical stone sculpture. I knew in that moment what my next art project was going to be. I would honor the beauty of my features, my bloodline, in stone.

“Why do you read that rubbish?” I asked her as I got ready to have breakfast with my mother. 

She shrugged and her dark hair slipped, exposing her bare shoulder. I felt drawn to her skin and yearned to taste. She was so beautiful. How could someone so perfect have chosen me? I finished buttoning my shirt and crawled up to her to kiss her shoulder. She smiled a little and flipped the page to another attractive, air-brushed model. I looked to the page and then to her face. When she looked at me, I turned away. I jumped out of the bed and grabbed my bag.

“What? You’re annoyed at me for not answering?”

“I don’t look like those guys, Basheera.”

She held my gaze. “I love you. I love your body. I want your body.”

I stood there in the silence and then shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. I’ll see you tonight.” And I left.

“How can they not do something with this room? It’s so beautiful,” my sister said in awe. She took small steps towards the middle, scanning the walls and ceiling in admiration.

“The house is like the size of two mansions, but I guess this room is a lot smaller than the rest.” I shrugged. I didn’t get why they bought the biggest mansion on the island when they were only two people.

“I hope I end up as rich as them. I don’t care what dad says about money. He’s probably just bitter he didn’t end up as successful as his sister.”

I stared at her as she ventured towards the lone discoball on the ground. It scattered beautiful shards of light in the already stunning room.

“Would you do to me what she did to him?” I asked starkly, not walking further into the room.

She twisted around and frowned. “Really, Tomaz? I would never do that to you or anyone I cared about.”

“Okay, okay.” I put my hands up in surrender. “That was a bit harsh to ask I admit.”

My sister kicked the discoball a little. She was no longer admiring the room with wide eyes. “We don’t have to have history repeat itself in this family.”

“We should head back now. The sun is nearly gone.”

“She said she was meeting me here.”

“She said she’d meet you here an hour ago.” I put my hand on my friend’s shoulder and felt her curly, kinky hair caress my skin. “I don’t think she’s–“

“She’s coming,” she snapped. “You can go if you want, but I’m waiting.”

I retracted my hand and let out a small sigh. “I’m not leaving you alone.” I tightened my scarf around my neck, hid my hands in my coat pockets, and stared at the cathedral’s clock tower with her.

“What do you think?” he asked. His hands trembled as he cradled the moon.

“It’s a little small. Don’t you think?” She narrowed her eyes to focus on it.

He took a step back and pulled the moon closer to him defensively. “I was out in orbit for weeks looking for this. You requested this.”

“I don’t want the moon anymore. I want the sun.” She pulled back the curtain and looked directly into the sun’s rays. “Isn’t it just the most glorious thing you have ever seen?”

He stared at her in disbelief before saying softly, “That would destroy this planet and it’s inhabitants.”

 “I will find someone else if you can’t do your job,” she responded back softly. He clenched his jaw, knowing he had no choice. She reached out and caressed the glass. “It must be mine.”

The drug swims through my veins, tickling my organs, and relaxing my limbs. I feel myself fall backwards but I don’t hit the hard ground, I float instead. I am surrounded by the sky, above me, below me, around me. I watch as the clouds glide by in the shape of pigs and dragons. It is so calm and beautiful and peaceful. This is amazing. I am somewhere else, somewhere both new and familiar, and there is not a worry on my mind. I don’t think until I start to fall from the sky and my body slams against the ground.
