picture-it-writeI rolled onto my side and closed my eyes. I couldn’t get comfortable on the sand. I rubbed my sunscreen-slick brow but ended up getting sand all over my face. Shaking my head, I tried to brush it away. Giving up, I sat up right and looked out to the water. I scanned the people splashing in the waves. Where was my son? The clouds draped the sky, leaving us alone in the chill. Fear clenched my heart. I looked over to my left to alert my wife, but she wasn’t there either.

Vintage Upcycled Turquoise Blue Syroco Style Mirror

Are you more motivated by the carrot or the stick? With so many of us preferring positive incentives to negative consequences, why is it that we like to beat each other down, to shame ourselves as an incentive for change? How many of us have looked in the mirror and been our own worst critics?

I’m fat.

I have crow’s feet.

I thought I would outgrow acne by now.

My eyes are uneven.

My ears stick out.

Is that a grey hair?

My eyebrows are too bushy.

We tear ourselves down and then use criticism and bullying to try to make others fit into the mold we’ve created in our mind. I don’t like hairy legs, so you should shave. I don’t like grey hair so you should dye your hair. You need to loose weight. You should wear makeup, change your clothes, pluck your eyebrows, etc. etc. etc. Everyone has an opinion of how others should lead their lives.

It’s time we looked at ourselves in the mirror and changed the way we speak to ourselves. Maybe then, we will change how we speak to others. It’s not wrong to want to improve yourself. Instead of “I’m fat,” look in the mirror and tell yourself, “I want to be healthy. I want to be strong.”

Handmade crowns by Elemental Child

Handmade crowns by Elemental Child

“From mother to daughter,” I whispered with tears in my eyes. The elemental crown buzzed in my hands. The electric power coursed through me. Colours swirled on the stone faces. I felt like the crown was about to fly away so I gripped it tighter. Suddenly the electricity disappeared and so did the colours. Shivers rattled my body and the hairs stood on the back of my arm. Kneeling beside my daughter’s grave, I lay the crown before me. More vibrations tickled my bones but they were no longer coming from the crown, they were coming from the grave.

I apologize for the delay in getting this post up. Usually we have them scheduled, but I thought I would have plenty of time to get home today and traffic had something else to say about that. Thank you for your patience.

Picture it & Write is a weekly creative writing prompt hosted by the Ermilia coauthors, Ermisenda and Eliabeth.  We invite you to join in; continue the story or starting your own based on inspiration from the image.  Poetry and foreign languages are welcome, but please provide a translation.  This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook and Pinterest.

ballet slippers in the forest

Sorry mom,

I have my own plans, my own dreams. I cannot continue to dance. I cannot continue to plan my cotillion with you. Who wears elbow length gloves anymore anyway? I love you; this isn’t about you. This isn’t me rebelling against the life you had. This is me finding my own passions. I have lived so long in your shadow, mimicked your poses in pictures, and tried to match your extensions that I have forgotten what it is like to dream. I once wanted to be a princess. It was a stupid dream, but it was a dream. I can’t be you. I don’t have the dancer’s heart.

I love you, but you need to let me go.

girl in forest with red roses

What’s wrong with me? I had it all. The fairy tale wedding, Prince Charming, I had everything I could have asked for. Yet here I sit, crumpled and broken. My own doing, I’ve run away. Do I not want to be happy? I love him, I do. Is it fear that caused my feet to wander?

What if reality doesn’t live up to the dream?

Fairy Dust

Better than a Yellow Brick Road

Pop. My neon glasses protected my eyes from the blast of colored powder, but the rest of my face now shimmered in a green even Envy would be jealous of. Impatient children rolled through the colored puddles and fairies fluttered about in pinks, orange, and white. Color fell from my cupped hands as we waited for the countdown. 3… 2… 1… Throwing the dust into the air, we were engulfed in a rainbow cloud that settled on the brick beneath our feet.  My painted nails and red lipstick no longer looked out of place. To us, the colored powder brought out a childish glee as if at any moment it would pick us off the path we ran and carry us to Neverland. For others, it had the power to grant wishes.
