Girl_effect_pink_logoThe Picture it & Write Publication had many hiccups, but we’re still proud of the final result. I’d love to be able to say we raised hundreds of dollars for The Girl Effect, but we’ve always said that every dollar counts. As we continue to be active in charity runs and other projects, I’m excited to see what we’ll be able to do in the years to come. Not counting our volunteer hours, we’ve donated $1646 USD since starting our company. In addition, we have $160 AUD circulating in Kiva loans .

One thing I like about The Girl Effect is that you can donate to the organization and let them pick what to put the money towards or you can select a project to fund. Ermisenda and I are big believers in the power of reading and education so I’m excited to announce that we’ve been able to donate $21 towards providing an Afghan girl with a scholarship to attend school.

Join Us By Donating.

Thank you to all of the writers who contributed pieces to the publication and thank you to everyone who bought a copy. Special thanks to everyone who continues to participate in our creative writing exercise.

Welcome to the Picture it & Write creative writing exercise. I invite people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (please provide a translation). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook and Pinterest.

Please continue to write however you’re inspired, but add a tag to the beginning of your post if there’s mature content in order to keep Picture it & Write an engaging event for all of our followers.

“I used to have a beautiful and expansive vocabulary. Then I took two years of calculus and I think the math crowded the English out of my brain.” Maria complained to her tutor while they prepared for the SATs.

“Don’t be silly,” Emmy encouraged. “Your brain is much more expansive than you realize, always growing to accommodate more information.”

Maria rolled her eyes. “Maybe… but if that’s true it’s like that file cabinet in Bruce Almighty. You pull it open and it expands forever, but it doesn’t mean you can find what you’re looking for.”

Emmy smiled. “No more stalling, what does copaibas mean?”

I’m very sorry to everyone that I’ve been radio silent after I post recently. Things at work are keeping me busy and I’ve been without my phone, so I couldn’t even comment during breaks in class. I’m hoping things slow down at the end of next week, so I’ll be back to join in the conversations. In the meantime, thank you for not abandoning my posts.

The van rocked back and forth, jostling the family inside. Camping gear knocked and clacked together. “Uhy-uhy-uhy-uhy,” the children chimed inside with each bump. That might have annoyed other parents, but there were smoother passages out of town. Mark and Jeff had chosen this path on purpose.

“Do you think we got rid of all the mini bears?” Jeff twisted around in the passenger seat to look at the children’s smiles. Two foster kids, an adopted son, a daughter from Mark’s previous marriage, and one of her friends. While the other kids nodded, the friend looked around, her brows knit and eyes narrowed in confusion. Her frown suggested concern that was not deep enough to be considered fear.

“Mini bears?”

Melissa chimed in to explain to her friend. “Squirrels,” she translated into the vernacular.

“There are two types,” Mark called from up front, having turned down the radio to listen to the conversation. “City mini bears are slender, fast, and stupid. Rural mini bears are fat, slow, and smart. If they were ever to breed, they would create a super mini bear that could enslave humanity. You’ve seen the YouTube videos of city mini bears running gauntlets to get to bird seed haven’t you? It’s already started.” Mark honked as someone cut him off, so Jeff picked up the story.

“Any time you travel between the city and the forest, you need to shake off any mini bears that may cling to the bottom of the car.”

The girl laughed. It sounded crazy, but this beat camping trips with her family. By now, everyone would be desperately clinging to the battery life on their cell phones, iPads, and MP3 players before a dead weekend.

I’m not exactly sure what possessed me to want to jog an entire 5K as a New Year’s Goal; I knew it wouldn’t be easy but it’s given me a new appreciation for runners, even more for the elderly ones.

Nothing motivates you to jog a 5k mote than an elderly woman in a boot-cast ahead of you. #sowemeetagain #nexttime

— Eliabeth Hawthorne (@EliaHawthorne) August 3, 2013

At the Hotcake Hustle in January, my group was passed by an elderly woman using a cane to help her with her boot-cast. Though it was a different woman and no cane, I met another Superwoman at the Melon Dash this Saturday. I saw her ahead of me and jogged, slowed to a power walk, she passed me, I jogged, and the pattern repeated until she pulled away from me at the 2 mile mark and the most I could do was drag my feet and try not to die of heat stroke.

It really puts my athletic ability into perspective, but I’m coming for you Super Women!

The Melon Dash benefited the North Texas Cat Rescue. In addition to Eliabeth’s competitive nature, she really enjoys being involved in the community. See more on the Community Involvement page.

Picture it & Write is a weekly creative writing exercise we’ve hosted for over a year now! It’s been so popular and the contributions from other writers so inspiring, that we’re turning it into a publication. You can still put your work up for consideration through the end of February by following these instructions. This is a chance for you to become a published author and support a great cause! If you’re already published, leave “author of…” with your submission and we will list you as such in the publication.

All sales of the publication will be donated to The Girl Effect.

The title is still a work in progress, but the design has been finalized! Check out Ermisenda’s beautiful work below.

Bruised and Blistered at Habitat for Humanity

It is much harder to hammer nails than you might think.  I could either hit the nail hard or straight, there was really no doing both.  Since most of what needed to be done required a ladder and being more than two rungs up petrifies me, I was thankful they were accommodating and found odd jobs for me like removing nails from supports and picking up scrap pieces.

Only having volunteered in the office or ReStore, this was my first time on a job site.  I hurt.  But it was rewarding and I got to go with a group of people I really enjoyed working with.  No longer can I say I’ve never used a staple gun.

We interrupt your normally scheduled Picture it & Write to bring you this important announcement.

It’s been a little over a year since Ermisenda started hosting Picture it & Write.  We look forward to it every week as you continue to dazzle us with your contributions. Whether you’ve had dreams of becoming a published author or you just contribute for fun, here’s your chance to have your writing in a publication.  100%* of sales from this publication will be go to The Girl Effect, a movement to improve the world through empowering girls to become educated leaders of their communities rather than child brides.

If you would like your work considered, paste the original contribution in the comments section of this post with a link back to the original, whether that be on your blog or a Picture it & Write post.  Submissions will be accepted until February 28, 2013.

You are encouraged to go through the archives and contribute to any that inspire you.  For a gallery of images, check the Facebook gallery or Pinterest board.

Not all submissions will be printed.  Ermilia, LLC will chose which submissions at the sole discretion of Ermisenda and Eliabeth.  If you are a photographer and would like to donate a picture to the publication, e-mail ermilia [at] live.com.au for consideration.

Has anyone else noticed that fortune cookies are less predictive and more instructive?  I like them, and they’re good quotes, but they really aren’t fortune cookies any more so much as quote cookies.  Take this one:

Enhance your karma by engaging in various charitable activities.

While I did derive some pleasure at scoffing and rolling my eyes at the various cookies telling me fame and fortune are in my future, I actually liked this one.  If you’ve explored the site much, you know Ermi and I support charities and participate in fund raising activities when we can.  Whether that has given us good karma or not, it’s something we will always strive to do, and in the next few months have a really exciting charity project all of you will be able to participate in.

The other fortune cookie I got reminded me of Plato’s allegory of the cave:

Do you need to do your good deed for the day? Join Kiva!

I needed to share this with all our lovely blogger followers! Here is the invite from me:

http://www.kiva.org/invitedby/ermisenda1487

They are giving away $25 vouchers that you can use to lend to disadvantaged entrepreneurs over the globe. The money is paid back, since it’s a loan, and you can re-loan it infinite times. You can augment your donation pool or keep it at $25. Support the fight against poverty by lending micro-loans to agriculture, food, retail, etc. projects!

I love supporting and lending through Kiva and for those who are on a budget, you can still lend with their new users promotion where they give you $25 to start with. What are you waiting for?
