Picture it & Write is a weekly creative writing prompt. We invite people to join in by commenting with a work of fiction to accompany the image; it doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (please provide a translation).

Please continue to write however you’re inspired, but add a tag to the beginning of your post if there’s mature content in order to keep Picture it & Write an engaging event for all of our followers.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

“Bury me!”

“What are you, five?”

“22. I’m such a tourist.”

“No, tourists don’t ask to be buried in the sand. You’re just weird.”

I look behind me, trying not to be obvious about the fact I’ve been eavesdropping. The girl is long and lanky. I would have been able to keep my face poised except that she is wearing mermaid fins as she shouts her commands.

As I stepped onto the sand, my shoes didn’t leave deep prints. The sand was moist and firm. The sky threatened to rain again. I hurried onto the beach, searching for what I came for. My hair whipped my face as a gust of wind slammed my body. There was no one else on the beach. I squinted as I looked to my left and right. The beach stretched out so far until it blurred with the grey horizon. Why wasn’t it here? Why couldn’t I feel it? Why wasn’t my sadness dissipating with each breath of fresh air?

Tucking my hand in my coat, I turned around. If I stayed out too long, I was sure to find half the beach in my clothes and stockings. As I dragged my feet towards the car, I realised that I would be forever searching. He wasn’t here now and he would never be here again.

Sorry for the delay today. It was meant to be Eliabeth’s turn this week and I can’t seem to get in contact with her. I (Ermisenda) have jumped in.

The bruises on my wrists darkened as the light from the sky extinguished. The slashes on my back continued to sting. Whenever the sea water lapped at an open wound, I cringed. I wanted to crawl away but all my energy had been sapped from me with the whipping.

My fingers dug deep into the sand as I wept. Even with the excruciating pain, I found some solitude. My mind drifted to my beautiful beloved. After all, it was due to our love that I had been left here to rot. White trash like myself was still not suitable for a woman of colour.

The water continued to caress my legs. Then I suddenly tensed. It was not water, there was someone touching my skin. Vulnerable, I tried to close into a fetal position. Was it the men of the village coming to finish the job or maybe my beloved coming to save me? Before I could catch their face, my vision went black.

The roar of waves crashing down onto the beach filled my ears. The occasional seagull squawked. My eyes stung and I struggled to open them with the sun’s penetrating rays blinding me. Warm, wet sand cradled me while salty foam lapped at my ankles. Men and women shouted in the distance. What happened? My muscles ached, salt water had scoured the inside of my nose and it burned. My stomach lurched and I vomited onto the glittering, golden sand. Firm hands suddenly clung onto my water dappled skin. “My baby,” I could hear my mother and father cooing. Once I stopped vomiting I turned to look behind me, still in shock of what occurred. The sea pulsed like a beast and hushed me to stay quiet.
