Very sorry I haven’t been keeping up with Picture it & Write as normal. I’ve just started a new job and Christmas has been utter chaos this year. Please stick around. Ermisenda is finishing chemo soon and may be able to return to writing. We’ll keep you posted on that as things progress.

Welcome to Picture it & Write, a weekly creative writing prompt here on ErmiliaBlog. I invite people to join in to our creative writing prompt. Comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image; it doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (please provide a translation).

Please continue to write however you’re inspired, but add a tag to the beginning of your post if there’s mature content in order to keep Picture it & Write an engaging event for all of our followers.

“Why are you crying? This is the best woman empowerment song in a decade.” Annie shook her head while I sobbed. She’d watched Frozen before me; I was a bit behind the curb when it came to pop culture. I didn’t want to explain it to her then, not sure how to find the words, but I’d always been different. I’d always seen the world in a different way. To me, Let it Go was the saddest song I’d ever heard. Didn’t she hear the same words I did? Elsa had to distance herself from her family to be who she was. She’d tried to hide, never learned what she could do. What if Mozart hadn’t been allowed to play piano? What if my parents had never bought me my first camera?

Cut along the dashes. Color within the lines. Ha. We are not a cookie cutter family. We bake ninja breadmen and put the lights on the tree last. We own cats who drink from toilet bowls and always want attention. We sing like no one is listening, dance like no one is watching, and eat like calories don’t matter.

fighter

I’m a fighter. This will not defeat me. No matter how miserable you make my days, my private time is mine. Stress will not seep into my evenings or take over my dreams. Your name will not pass through my lips on the weekend. This is my life. You will not defeat me.

candles

Heat surrounds us. My two sisters and I hear whispers, one sided conversations, prayers. People think we have a loom, a thread, sharp scissors. Snip. Ignorance. Our world is not one of colors and pictures, of tapestries and stories. Our world is one of light we cannot see.

We hear the screech of tires, smell alcohol amongst the smoke. The three of us converge on a set of candles and wait. We watch without ever seeing. I purse my lips. Whoosh. Someone’s light is blown out.

dice

Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Scrape.
Like nails. Nails in a coffin.
Nails on a chalkboard.

Dice sealing my fate.
Chance deciding my future.
Snake eyes. Loss. Loss. Loss.

Happy Halloween! This week’s picture is my Halloween costume, taken in front of a prop we built for a decorating contest at the office. I invite people to join in to our creative writing prompt. Eliabeth-as-Cersei

Like Tessa, I shift into someone else. There is no clockwork angel beating against my chest and my bones do not shift, my skin does not shrink or stretch, but I do skim the mind of the woman whose clothes I wear. She is villainized. In many ways she deserves it, but I can see another side of her. I see a mother who would do anything for her children. She is a warrior.

The next time I sigh impatiently while you learn to use your new smart phone, remind me that you taught me to use a spoon. The next time I roll my eyes while teaching you photoshop, remind me that you bought me my first camera. I wouldn’t be who I am today if you hadn’t raised me so well. From the first game of peekaboo to the day I graduated college, you’ve showered me with love.

park-architecture

You see an empty field. I see a playground for my daughter.
You see discarded bottles and trash. I see benches where people can rest their feet after a long day.
You see a stream filled with chemicals. I see an opportunity for a fishing spot.
You see disaster. I see opportunity.
My fingers bring to life what my imagination concocted.

wet-footprint

Watch a child play; it is one of the most beautiful things in the world. I remember spending half an hour climbing the stairs. I would grab the banister posts and stretch my body down the stairs, pretending that I was being blown away by a tornado. Now my knees gripe as I climb the stairs. The creek like the floorboards beneath my feet. There’s nothing fun about moving from one floor to the next anymore, not like when I was a child.

Moderate language.

human-puppet

Life is not a series of checkboxes.

Graduate highschool. Check.

Graduate college. Check.

Get married. Check.

Have babies. Check.

Society has more rules than I can count, more rules than is necessary.

Don’t wear white after labor day. Check.

Only eat french toast for breakfast. Check.

Finish your meal before dessert. Check.

It’s time to break free. Maybe I don’t want to conform to breakfast’s monopoly on french toast. Maybe I like wearing white whenever a damn well please. Maybe I don’t want to go to college or have children. Maybe I want to start a company. Maybe I want to adopt.

I reach up and cut my strings. I cut away your hold on me.
