Listen & Write is a spin off of Picture it & Write and works almost identically.  Eliabeth will post a song and accompanying text.  We then invite you to either continue where she leaves off or create your own piece of fiction or poetry based on the music.  You might imagine your own version of a music video or write about someone listening to the song; you are only limited by your imagination.  Other languages are welcome so long as you add a translation.

If you have a suggestion for a song, leave it in the comment along with your contribution and they’ll be worked in to the line-up.

Hot N Cold by Katy Perry

Nathaniel didn’t appreciate that his romantic life could be summed up in a pop song.  Both of the Dawson girls were running hot and cold on him.  He had been closer to Ana for years, best friends even, but now she had a boyfriend and Leo was the one to take her out to concerts and Leo was the one whom she went to when she needed to talk or cry on someone’s shoulder.  Where did that leave him?  What was his role now?  Every day felt more distant.

Then there was Tatiana.  Talk about PMS.  One moment they are having a completely pleasant talk and the next thing he knows, she’s storming off, sticking her nose in his business, and leaving unwelcome presents on his doorstep.  How he would love to kiss and make up with her.

Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield

Aniela lay on her bed looking up at the chandelier.  Graduation was tomorrow; everything she had worked for would be accomplished.  Her grades weren’t perfect, but they were as good as she could manage.  She didn’t want to go to college, not when she didn’t have a goal, something to be working toward.  The eggshell ceiling above her was like a blank page, her future unwritten.  Even though she did not want to be Queen, she envied Theodore; he had always known what he was working toward.

Unable to lay still any longer, Aniela ran outside.  She needed to move, needed to run, needed to do something.  She gasped as the rain smacked into her, coming down almost horizontally.  Pulling the sleeves of her sweater over her her fingers, she ran.  Unconventional? Sure, but it was something.  It was movement; it wasn’t staying in the same place, treading water until she could no longer stay above the surface.  She wasn’t sure what she was running toward, she just needed to run.

Big Girls Don’t Cry by Fergie

“Mother…” Aniela no longer trembled at the prospect of her mother’s wrath, but the thought of disappointing her would always be like lemon juice on an open wound.

“It’s time for me to get my own place.”  It was time for her to be a big girl, get her own space, learn how to drive and do her own laundry.  “I hope you know this has nothing to do with you, I love you mom, but I need…” she was going to say “peace” but that would sound bad.  “To do this on my own.”  She offered a half heart’d smile.

It was time to move on with her life, start a new chapter.  She would always love her mother, always crave her approval, but she needed a clarity she would never get living in the manor.  Even though she was leaving the safety of her childhood home and her mother’s protective, even if sometimes overbearing bosom, she knew this was the right decision.  She just had to break it to her mother.  Aniela took a deep breath and let it out slowly, watching herself in the mirror.

Still Alive from Portal

Megan hugged herself.  She rocked gently back and forth, pulling the white jacket tighter around her.  The walls were padded and soundproof, but she didn’t notice.  Nothing about her surroundings affected her at all; she lived in her head and sang to herself.

“This was a triumph.  I’m making a note here: huge success.”

Her boyfriend had dumped her for someone else, someone younger, a blond with a bigger chest.  He was her world and in losing him, he had broken her.  She’d snapped.  She wasn’t even sure where the knife came from, but suddenly she had one in her hand.  She wasn’t upset, nooo.  She was happy for him.  He had won someone “better.”  Even though he broke her heart, tore it into pieces, and threw it in the fire, she was happy for him.  She wanted him to go away.  She made him go away.  The knife sliced through his flesh as easily as scissors through paper.

While he lay dying, she was still alive.  When he was dead, she was still alive.  Still alive.  Still alive.

One by Apocalyptica

Orch Dork. Cello is for losers.  Their taunts burrowed into me thicker than a knife.  Cuts healed, memories did not.  I would show them, I would show them all.  I knew my dad had a gun in the house for protection, well this counted.  I wasn’t going to take their bullying any more.

The next day I took it to school.  My heart was going a million miles and hour.  I wasn’t going to kill them, just maim them a little, show them the kind of pain that they’d been inflicting on me for years.  not everyone is an athlete, not everyone has to be.  That’s not a reason to torment them.  Now they would see, now they would feel my pain.

I felt a shove from behind and my books went flying.  “Cluts,” they teased.  This was it, I reached for my bag and I pulled it out.  My hands trembled.  I aimed right for their chest knowing that I would miss.  I had never shot a gun before, what was the chance of me actually killing someone.  I didn’t remember what happened next; everything was a blur.  People were running, screaming.  I closed my eyes.

Bang.

Obviously I am inspired by songs with lyrics, but I know you might be wanting some without so starting on the next Listen & Write I will be posting from the suggestions, so leave any songs you would like to nominate in the post with your comment.  Thanks!

Take it on the Run – Reo Speedwagon

“Jenna’s cousin’s Marci overheard the woman cutting her hair that your boyfriend is cheating on you.”

The sincerity on Lily’s face was touching, but Samatha just couldn’t give much credit to her words.  “So… you heard it from a friend, who heard it from her cousin’s hair dresser that Mark is cheating on me?”  It sounded ridiculous, but it was a small town and there was nothing small towns liked more than their gossip.

Lily nodded and patted Samatha’s arm consolingly.  “Said he was out with some blonde.  I don’t believe it, but if you do, you just walk away.  You tell his lying behind to hit the road!”

“Such strong evidence, however can I refute?” Samatha asked sarcastically.

I hope you enjoy the second installment of Listen & Write.  I will eventually get to where it posts on a set schedule but until then, today’s song is “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri.  (I promise to include ones without lyrics, but I had to get this off my chest.)

Eliabeth paced back and forth, threatening to wear a hole in her carpet.  Steam shot from her ears.

“What are you going to do?” Ermisenda asked, giddy that Eliabeth was livid enough to take action, but upset that AT&T was treating her coauthor this way.

The sharp tap of the keyboard was Eliabeth’s only answer as she posted furiously to Facebook and Twitter.  “They can’t treat me this way!”  She exploded, her typing become more vigorous and less accurate.  “I liked them, I DEFENDED them.  When Boy Friend wanted me to switch to Sprint, I loyally stuck by AT&T and this is how they treat me?  I am not paying $48 a month when they told me $19.95 at sign up.

“You go girl!” Ermisenda cheered.

The Thank You Economy, the book that inspired Eliabeth’s social media war against AT&T sat on the floor next to her, egging her on.

You broke all your promises. Eliabeth seethed.  Now you want me back?  You don’t get to get me back!

“Don’t come back for me next year with your deceitful and unethical business practices AT&T,” Eliabeth posted on AT&T’s Facebook wall.  “I’m done with you.  Don’t come back at all!”

AT&T, who do you think you are?

-Eliabeth Hawthorne

Yes, I’ve had a bit of a one track mind lately as you can tell by what this song inspired.  I will go into more detail later.  I meant to have the post up detailing my experience with AT&T first, but then there was a fire at my apartment complex and dealing with that kinda took precedence.

Listen and Write – Adele – Someone Like You

Given the popularity of Picture it & Write, we’re introducing a spin off.  If you guys enjoy it, we’ll turn it into a regular thing, and if you don’t, that’s fine too.  We love interacting with you and we want you to enjoy ErmiliaBlog as much as we do.

Listen and Write is going to operate almost identically to Picture it and Write, but instead of a picture, you’re going to get a song and an accompanying paragraph.  We then welcome everyone to either continue the paragraph or write their own.  You might see your own interpretation of a music video or imagine someone listening to the song.  Poetry is welcome, but please add a translation if it’s in another language.  It is entirely open to your imagination and your interpretation.  I hope this turns into another fun writing exercise, so without further ado, the first Listen and Write song is “Someone Like You” by Adele.

The stench of beer and pizza from several days ago lingered in the man cave.  Nathaniel had lost his job and he felt his entire life slipping away.  The girl he was in love with was dating someone else, not that he had ever bothered to share his feelings with her.  He knew he wasn’t good enough for her.  She was looking for marriage, a family, a life he could never provide, but she had always been there for him, a glowing possibility that he worried would soon no longer exist.  No one would have pegged him for an Adele fan, but something in her voice, something in this song spoke to him.  He would never find someone else like Aniela, but bravado and pride had him mouthing the words in the darkness of his man cave.
