Team Katniss

I’m embarrassed to admit that when the whole “Team Gale” “Team Peeta” thing happened, I was Team Peeta because I didn’t come up with this answer. Now that I’m reading Catching Fire, I’m noticing the love-triangle drama that wasn’t in (or wasn’t as prevalent at least) in book 1. I can’t discus it further without spoilers I’m afraid so, minor spoilers follow.

In the arena, Katniss was worried about survival and taking care of her family. If anything, her family is in more danger in Catching Fire than in The Hunger Games, so I’m more than a little annoyed at how much Gale and Peeta cross her mind. Collins does at least tie it into the plot by saying that Peeta is the one the Capital has chosen for her, which is why Katniss is rebelling against that match when he is clearly the better person.

I’m Team Katniss all the way. If she wants to never marry or have kids because she doesn’t want them in the reaping, I can support that. Strictly speaking between Gale and Peeta, I liked Peeta better than Gale in book 1 and I like him so much better than Gale (so far) in book 2.
