I urge people to join in, comment with your paragraph of fiction to accompany the image. It doesn’t have to follow my story or reflect the same themes. It can be a poem or in a different language (provide a translation please ). Anyone who wants to join in, is welcome. This photograph will be reblogged under Ermisenda on tumblr and added to the Picture it & Write gallery on Facebook.
Every fortnight we hope to host a photograph suggested by contributors. So, keep those photograph recommendations coming. Submit your favourite images (with credit) for next week’s Picture it & write!
The deadly smoke danced up towards the ceiling as if trying to escape from her crimson lips. The smell of nicotine was pungent as it seeped through the black satin gloves she wore. Sylvia didn’t know why she bothered to come on board to this cruise, it was full of hot air and nothing more. The grand hall was littered with generals, lords, ladies and other members of the elite. The men whose eyes danced in her direction blubbered with loose, deeply intoxicated smirks.
Out from the crowd a robust man caught her eye. Within seconds he advanced towards her, Sylvia averted her eyes and inhaled the cigarette deeply. “My sweet pearl, Sylvia,” The man leaned in towards her, his cheek felt like sandpaper and she could smell his abhorrent breath. “Dance with me.”

Your use of descriptive words aided my visualization of the scene. The high society, the drunken bourgeois and their insatiable lust… and poor Sylvia.
It was as if I was standing in a corner watching.
Well written.
Thank you, Kwadwo. This is part of a bigger story I’m writing behind the scenes. 🙂

I like how you wrote ‘intoxicated smirks’. All revolves around this smoking theme… Very well-written 🙂
Yeah my mini series ‘Unpredicted’ continues… http://evilnymphstuff.wordpress.com/2012/07/15/destructive-yet-inspiring/
Thanks for your compliment. Hell yeah! To hell with it! You go girl! Haha, I’m glad she came to that conclusion at the end. I really love your comparison of smoke to love. Both are addictions. I like how you picked that up. I can’t wait to read more! Thanks for contributing to Picture it & write, M.D.

hi Ermilia, here is my exercise for you today

A great piece, Terry. This is very true for many people. It’s fascinating how it was so “Cool” and now the campaigns that we’re bombarded with are about how BAD smoking is. Society has twisted 180 degrees on that topic. Thanks for writing. I love this line “It comes out of your mouth as a wispy cloud, and aggressively attaches itself to anything within a few inches.” I hope to see you again at Picture it & write!
thank you for a great comment!!! have a good week…

Joe
Great work, Joe. I really like how the ending was open-ended. A great finish. I kept waiting for him to be mugged. I thought that maybe she was one of those ‘luring’ con-people who brings the rich lonely guys into a mugging group. But… I have a dark imagination. Thanks for contributing this week at Picture it & write!
Here’s my contribution: SMOKE INN
Hah! Cute, sweet and funny. Great work. Thanks for contributing this week to Picture it & write, Kwadwo. The title is also pun-tastic. 😀
Hi again! I tried fiction this time. https://hankie.wordpress.com/ Thanks for including me! 🙂
Very quirky and with a bittersweet end. I love the line about women eating lipstick. I wonder how much indeed. Thanks for contributing this week to Picture it & write. I hope to see you again next week!
Whoops. I just realised the “publish” didn’t happen. Trying again! http://hankie.wordpress.com/2012/07/16/3435/

Your piece captured me from the moment I began reading, it matched the picture perfectly.
Here’s mine: http://sphrbn.wordpress.com/2012/07/16/picture-it-write-burning-kiss/
Thanks! Your opening stanza was fantastic. I loved the description of the smoke as if ballerinas. A very dark ending but an effective one. Great creation of atmosphere. Thanks for contributing this week to Picture it & write.
Nicotine is one of the most addictive chemicals in nature. This is the reason why smokers are addicted to cigarettes. ‘,;*, Many thanks healthmedicinelab
That is very true! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Glory.

Yours is very well written, my favourite line being: “The smell of nicotine was pungent as it seeped through the black satin gloves she wore”
I could almost smell it as I read it. Nice visual 🙂
Thanks so much. I worked hard on it! Your story was brilliant and bittersweet. I don’t know if I’m reading too much into her black dress and the loss of a partner but did he die? Is she at a funeral? Great storytelling regardless. I love the repetition of ‘an old friend’. Thanks for contributing to this week’s Picture it & write!
You are very welcome! You deserve the praise! 🙂
Thank you! And no you weren’t reading too much into it; For me, I picture her at a funeral but I didn’t feel the need to write that detail out. Some things are better left unsaid and up to the reader to decide 🙂
So very true!

Witty and cute! I loved the ‘As always, Chief’ part. Great work. Thanks for contributing this week to Picture it & write!
Nice, Ermi. You put me in the moment with this! So mixed up in my own breath and in his… dreading this dance… scared what you are going to write me into doing!
Thanks! It’s part of my cruise ship story I’ve been working on recently. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Will we get to read more?
If I finish it. 😛

Hello again, I’m a bit late. I’m so busy this time of year… 😉
This one was fun….
Yours was wonderful… although I was cringing when he asked her to dance with him – what a sleezy character… 🙂
Thanks for the praise. You’re too kind. 🙂 Fantastic, Carolyn. I love the raw gutsy edge this story had. You could really tell that the character was bitter and hateful. It sounded authentic too. Thanks for contributing this week to Picture it & write!
‘It sounded authentic too.’ That comment makes my little heart sing; thanks so much… I was a little unsure how it would ‘come across’; after all I’m not a guy!!
Thanks for this opportunity. I’m realising a love for writing that I knew I had to a degree however; by joining in the ‘prompt’ style of writing (on offer) it is highlighting for me how truly wonderful and deep this love goes within me… 🙂
That’s fantastic. I’m so glad to hear that. The prompt style allows people to contribute small or large amounts, whatever comes naturally in response to the image. It also makes sure that as writers we don’t get lazy and practice every week!
The grim reaper sat there.
Smiling as he met her.
The ash coming out of her lungs.
Like a bird’s last songs.
Before the night is over.
The grim reaper has a new lover.
-Otheus
Lovely! I loved your choice of the grim reaper watching her as she smokes. Nice touch. Thanks for contributing this week. 🙂
Awesome! The first one that wasn’t cigarette smoke!
A nice piece, I enjoyed it. I just found this exercise and added my first contribution tonight. Thank you for this, it was fun! http://musingsfromtheturnippatch.wordpress.com/2012/07/18/picture-it-story-71712/
Dark and alluring. Nice work! I really liked the repetitive structure of this sentence ‘Every movement, every breath, every sip made a man want to possess this creature, protect it, please it.’ It worked well. Thanks for contributing to Picture it & write, I hope to see you again next week!
This was a fun exercise, it pulled me in a new direction. I will be reading the entries with gusto!
Here’s The Burning Bush. Back soon to catch up!
I’ve never smoked before but the description of Annie’s first inhale made me feel like I had! Awesome description, I wanted to cough along side her. I’m glad Annie decided not to stick around. Those girls don’t sound like the best of influences. Thanks for contributing this week to Picture it & write, Annie!

Hehe! Nice ending. What a shame for our main character. Ah well, better luck next time. I like how she dissapeared beneath a cloud of smoke when she entered the smoking zone. A great touch. Thanks for contributing today at Picture it & write!
