Ink and paper are sometimes passionate lovers, oftentimes brother and sister, and occasionally mortal enemies. ~Terri Guillemets
My writing relationship between blank page and typeface is one of friendship. Although, I would prefer them to be even friendlier, such as passionate lovers. Maybe I need to dim the lights and grab some candles next time I write… What’s the relationship between your words and your page at the moment?

When I was drawing all the time, I sometimes used to stare at a piece of paper until it revealed “its” picture and then just trace what I saw until it began to come to life. Each piece of paper was different, with the fibers forged together in its own unique pattern that revealed a different picture. I often found that if you tried to force your own image on a page that had its own, it became quite a contentious battle.
Sometimes when I write, certain words or phrases just want to come out… or maybe a certain meter or the shape or structure of a paragraph. I never stopped to consider it might be the same thing, the page trying to reveal “its” story.
That’s such a beautiful and enlightening way of describing it. I have to agree, at times the words just come and I feel very little control over them. At other times I’m dragging them out by their ears, desperate to put some words before it starts flowing. Thanks for sharing, Annie!
