“He allowed himself to be swayed by his conviction that human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but that life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.”
-Gabriel García Márquez
I love this quote and the artwork was beautiful. Although I haven’t lived a long life, I believe that instead of continually changing every day that I’ve had chapters in my life that have required me to start anew, to give birth to myself once again.
Do you think we continually recreate ourselves on a daily basis or that we have significant moments in our lives where we must give birth to ourselves again?

I don’t see it as an either / or choice. I believe that each moment offers us the chance for rebirth / renewal. I also believe there are certain pivotal moments occur where it becomes crucial to take that chance. Namaste
Thanks for your perspective, grosenberg!
I think it’s more of the latter… I think we all have significant moments in our lives where we are reborn into something new and different.. like when we get married or have children or even something more staid like changing professions… these are all moments of rebirth where we die to our previous being and become something new…
Joseph Campbell is particularly eloquent on this topic
Marriage, having children are great examples of those pivotal moments. Thanks for commenting, Layla! I’ll have to investigate into this J. Campbell fellow.
I think there is very little comparison between what mother and child go through at birth, and the choices/chances/do-overs life offers us at every moment.
That said, I think the rebirth of the Phoenix, rising from the ashes of the fire, has always been the excellent metaphor it was intended to be. Burned by defeat, true desire is born anew.
I suppose he wasn’t trying to draw a direct link but more or a metaphorical link of being “born” again. Whatever that might be. I have always loved the Phoenix, a beautiful, powerful symbol. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, Annie.
Reintarnation: being born again as a hillbilly.
Hahaha! Nice one, kvennarad.
